It’s no secret the Mercedes-AMG G63 is a work of art. The boxy stunner brings luxury, performance and utility in a tough package tying back to its military roots. The centerpiece, of course, is its handcrafted 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 and the 577 horses resting within. It’s only fitting that every engine to go into the rugged SUV is signed by its individual builder, in much the same way a painter signs their paintings.
Wood Carving – Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG – Woodworking Art
As we all know, though, not all works of art are rendered in canvas. MotorTrend recently found such an example on the YouTube channel of Woodworking Art. Unlike the ones you can drive off the showroom, though, this AMG G63 is handcrafted nearly entirely out of wood.
“The wooden car I built this time, it’s 2021 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG,” writes the unnamed craftsman in the description. “Latest Mercedes-Benz G-Class in 2021, an SUV full of masculinity and bold warrior. The car is made by wood type: Fujian cypress (with glossy coating), from monolithic wood”
From start to finish, he lets his skill do all the talking. After choosing the right planks of wood, he goes to work bringing his AMG G63 vision to life. First, he knocks out the basic shape of the SUV, smoothing out the rough edges while carving out more and more detail. All good so far, but what he does next is levels beyond those basic wood toy cars you played with as a kid.
As you can see above, every piece is exquisitely detailed. From using a Dremel to add tread to the tires, to chiseling the handcrafted V8 from a block of wood, this AMG G63 lives up to the real deal. And the best part? The whole thing rides on a sturdy spring suspension. Which comes in handy when it goes on a trip around town later on.
Alas, this AMG G63 is already spoken for. With this much work going into the model, though, it’s no surprise. We can’t wait to see his next handcrafted Benz.
