Mercedes-AMG presented the extensively revised GLE 63 S 4MATIC+ and GLS 63 4MATIC+, further sharpening the performance credentials of its SUV portfolio. The two top models combine characteristic V8 power with state-of-the-art technology, exclusive design and an especially broad spread between sportiness, comfort and everyday usability. At the heart of both models is the thoroughly updated AMG M177 EVO engine. The 4.0-litre biturbo V8 unit embodies Mercedes-AMG performance DNA to perfection. A series of fundamental engineering modifications marks a decisive step in keeping this iconic power unit future-proof; ready to meet upcoming regulations while continuing to deliver exceptional performance.

Updates to the engine include a flat-plane crankshaft, modified intake camshaft, optimised fuel-injection system and state-of-the-art exhaust aftertreatment. Like its predecessor, the M177 EVO is built in Affalterbach according to the “One man, one engine” philosophy.

With the version of the M177 EVO presented in the new GLE 63 S 4MATIC+ and GLS 63 4MATIC+, AMG is laying the foundation for a new generation of V8 engines that will be both more powerful and more efficient, while remaining legally compliant worldwide. The basis for this balance is the new flat-plane crankshaft: it reduces rotating masses, improves the engine’s ability to rev and ensures particularly precise response.

With 450 kW (612 hp), the M177 EVO delivers the same output as its predecessor. Its maximum torque of 850 Nm is available across a wide engine-speed range from 2.500 to 4.500 rpm. Thanks to state-of-the-art exhaust aftertreatment, including a particulate filter fitted as standard worldwide, it also meets the latest emissions standards.

Further technical modifications include an optimised injection system, newly designed intake and exhaust ports, a revised intake camshaft, as well as improvements to the compressor wheel and the turbocharger housing. These measures also aim to optimise accelerator-pedal inputs, increase efficiency and harmonise power delivery.

The extensive updates to the M177 EVO are complemented by mild-hybrid technology featuring an integrated starter generator (ISG) 2.0 and an additional 48-volt electrical system. The ISG contributes an extra 17 kW (23 hp) and 205 Nm of torque, supporting power delivery. It also provides additional torque at low revs, enables energy recuperation during deceleration and supports smooth engine restarts.

Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds (GLE 63 S 4MATIC+) and 4.2 seconds (GLS 63 4MATIC+), along with a top speed of 280 km/h, underline the performance capability of both models.

The new AMG Performance exhaust system
The AMG Performance exhaust system has also been newly developed. It contributes decisively to the V8’s acoustic character and underlines the emotional appeal of the GLE 63 S 4MATIC+ and GLS 63 4MATIC+. With the standard exhaust-valve control, the sound can be adapted – from a discreet note in Comfort mode to a more dynamic expression in the Sport+ programme.

The exhaust valve allow the sound to be adapted to the current driving situation. It can be influenced either via selected driving programmes or using the button in the central control panel of the centre console. In this way, the sound profile can be tailored precisely to the desired balance between restraint and emotional presence.

Emotional performance design with an unmistakable AMG face
The new performance design gives the GLE 63 S 4MATIC+ and GLS 63 4MATIC+ even greater presence and status. The completely redesigned front section, with its characteristic AMG specific radiator grille, enlarged air intakes for effective cooling of the powerful V8 and exclusive LED lighting with AMG specific light signature, sharpens the distinctive appearance of both high-performance SUVs.

The rear view is defined by the striking twin tailpipes of the AMG Performance exhaust system. The characteristic diffuser design in the rear bumper area further underlines the dynamic, performance-oriented look and makes a clear AMG statement.

Sporty, comfortable and off-road capable in one: AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension
The AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension with air suspension and adaptive damping continuously adapts to the driving situation. AMG specific elastokinematics and infinitely variable damping control optionally enable a firm, sporty set-up for the best possible driving characteristics, or a comfort set-up for a more compliant damping characteristic – for example on long journeys. In the ‘Trail’ driving programme, the ride height is increased by 55 mm for off-road use, while the damping control, Active Ride Control and all-wheel-drive system are specifically adapted to the conditions.

The GLE 63 S 4MATIC+ and GLS 63 4MATIC+ maintain a constant ride height through automatic air-suspension regulation – regardless of load. In the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving programmes ‘Sport’ and ‘Sport+’, the vehicle level is lowered by ten millimetres. In the ‘Comfort’ driving programme, the level is also lowered by ten millimetres from 120 km/h. This reduces air resistance and therefore fuel consumption. In addition, driving stability improves due to the lower centre of gravity.

To increase ground clearance on poor roads or ramps, the level can be raised by up to 20 millimetres at the push of a button with the engine running – both when stationary and while driving. This gives both performance SUVs a particularly broad operating range, from dynamic road use to demanding everyday scenarios and light off-road sections.

Perfect handling thanks to active roll stabilisation: AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL
As standard, both models are equipped with the active roll stabilisation system AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL. It noticeably reduces body roll in corners and contributes to particularly stable, precise handling in this SUV segment. Suspension and steering respond with high precision to the respective driving situation and road-surface conditions.

To achieve this, active electromechanical stabilisers with AMG-specific control are installed on both axles. Up to 1,000 times per second, the associated sensors analyse driving manoeuvres and the road surface. On this basis, body movements are compensated immediately and with the highest precision. During cornering, as well as when driving over road damage on one side, AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL reduces roll effects to a minimum. The compensating stabilisation also has a positive effect off-road. The completely newly developed ESP® system offers even more precise control strategies for maximum driving pleasure.

The permanent AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive with fully variable torque distribution ensures optimum traction under all conditions. To withstand the high torque of the M177 EVO engine, the drive shafts on the front and rear axles have been specially developed. They guarantee maximum durability, even under extreme conditions.

AMG rear axle locking differential: Intelligent power distribution for maximum driving dynamics
Together with the standard, electronically controlled AMG rear axle locking differential, the performance SUVs respond even more agilely – for even more driving pleasure. When cornering, the locking differential distributes power optimally between the two rear wheels. It continuously adapts to the driving situation and, for example, increases stability during a lane change. In doing so, it reduces slip at the inside wheel without any braking intervention – so no power is lost.

In the event of speed differences at the driven wheels, more torque is sent to the wheel with better grip to reduce wheelspin. The locking differential also improves traction and stability in all driving situations – from pulling away and acceleration to dynamic cornering and braking – as well as in challenging conditions such as snow. When manoeuvring or in city traffic, it increases comfort compared with a mechanical locking differential. The interventions are aligned with the driving situation and the ESP® mode. In this way, the locking differential broadens the spread between driving dynamics, comfort, handling and driving safety.

AMG DYNAMIC SELECT: A wide range of vehicle characteristics
Using the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving programmes, the driver can influence the overall character of the driving experience in the GLE 63 S 4MATIC+ and GLS 63 4MATIC+.
– ‘Comfort’: Focuses on a comfortable overall set-up with particularly harmonious gearshifts and smooth steering.
– ‘Sport’ and ‘Sport+’: Allow a step-by-step increase in dynamism. The 9G transmission operates with shortened shift times. In addition, the throttle-blipping function is activated; together with controlled misfires, it creates a sporty, emotional driving and sound experience. The suspension and steering are tuned more firmly and throttle response is more direct.
– ‘Trail’ and ‘Slippery’: Target optimum off-road capability and ideal traction on icy or snow-covered roads. Smooth gearshifts and gentle throttle response reduce drive power to suit the surface and speed.
– ‘Individual’: All parameters can be adjusted to suit personal preferences.

Exclusive wheel selection
Customers can choose from various AMG light-alloy wheels and AMG forged wheels for the new high-performance SUVs. As standard, both models are fitted with wheels in a multi-spoke design. For the GLE 63 S 4MATIC+, wheel variants up to 22 inches in diameter are available. The GLS 63 4MATIC+ can be equipped with wheels up to 23 inches. This allows customers to tailor the visual appearance even more precisely to their personal preferences – from elegant understatement to a particularly expressive performance look.

High-quality, performance-oriented and digital: The cockpit
In the interior, passengers are welcomed by an elegant, high-quality ambience that combines sportiness and luxury. The latest-generation AMG Performance steering wheel – optionally in Nappa leather, with MICROCUT microfibre covering or in an exclusive carbon version – fits perfectly in the hand. With AMG typical control buttons, it enables direct activation of all relevant performance functions.

A range of leather upholstery options is available for the seat covers, from sporty Nappa leather Exclusive in black, Macchiato Beige, Beech Brown and Red Pepper, to Nappa leather Exclusive Style in black and Macchiato Beige, and exclusive MANUFAKTUR variants in Yacht Blue, Tartufo Brown or Carmine Red. AMG trim elements in carbon or aluminium look, as well as the MICROCUT microfibre headlining, further underline the performance character.

The new MB.OS operating system with high-resolution displays delivers all performance data in brilliant quality. It also gives customers AMG-specific displays such as torque distribution, G-forces and detailed engine parameters at a glance. In this way, the digital cockpit combines intuitive operation, comprehensive information and a clearly performance-oriented presentation.

MANUFAKTUR personalisation programme: Extensive customisation options
The MANUFAKTUR personalisation programme offers extensive scope for personalising the GLE 63 S 4MATIC+ and GLS 63 4MATIC+. With exquisite paint finishes such as MANUFAKTUR Hightech Silver Magno, Patagonia Red metallic, Mystic Blue metallic, Opalith White metallic, Alpine Grey solid, Opalith White Magno, Silicon Grey solid, Côte d’Azur light blue metallic or Ireland mid green metallic, each vehicle acquires its own unique character.

The optional MANUFAKTUR interior package includes fine leather upholstery, carbon trim elements and exclusive decorative stitching. Along with the AMG Night Package II with dark chrome accents, this results in a vehicle that is unmistakable in every respect.
