Small tasks – seeking perfection
To build the best, you need to use the best. And this is exactly what AMG does, by employing the most skilled German technical staff. In its engine building facility, they combine the human factor with advanced instrumentation, to deliver the 2-liter M139-specification engine. Build with incredible tolerances, to ensure it lives up to the hype – and lasts a long time.

Using all the tech to make it come together
The AMG 2-litre engine is very potent. To generate so much power, from such a small swept capacity, is challenging. It means that AMG must have an absolutely perfect assembly. To produce 416hp from only 2-liter of capacity is a huge achievement. But it also means that AMG had to be precise. At the level of boost that is being applied to the 2-liter four-cylinder engine, AMG uses sophisticated laser and light-powered measuring technologies, to ensure all components are within the correct tolerances of each other.

Small but strong
The 2-litre engine’s cylinders reduce friction and boost power, by using nanoslide technology. This coating helps to ensure the cylinders fire at peak efficiency. The nanoslide technology is proven, having already been used in the large capacity M156 6.2-liter V8. The piston components, heads and conrods, are also forged instead of cast, which optimizes structural strength, which is crucial for an engine running high boost levels.

Lots of power-on oversteer
The AMG M139 2-liter engine offers a lot of power, in a compact package. That allows the company to put a very potent powerplant in some much smaller cars – with predictive results. The A45-series AMG cars might be all-wheel drive, but with 369 lb-ft pulsing through the drivetrain, things can go entertainingly sideways.

Allowing you to see the magic happen
To immerse owners of the world’s most powerful 2-liter engine, AMG streams a wealth of dynamic data to the digital instrumentation system. One of the most amazing things about the M139 engine is how quickly it spools-up under boost, due to the smaller and lighter components. That allows it to deliver more than 400hp, with great immediacy. With the array of digital readouts, drivers can see how the engine reacts, in a variety of parameters.

A giant-killing performance sedan
Perhaps the best application for AMG’s M139 engine is the CLA 45. With its slick four-door coupe shape and fair trunk space, the CLA 45 is a very convincing high-performance sedan, for those who prefer something smaller in size. There is no compromise in terms of performance. The all-wheel-drive system can be wildly liberal through corners but also helps the CLA 45 to run 0-60mph in only 4-seconds.

Splitting power between axles and wheels
To balance the amazing amount of engine power than AMG has extracted from its 2-liter engine is an advanced 4Matic+ drivetrain. It uses two electronically controlled multi-disc clutched to split torque between the individual rear wheels. Their result of that is an ability to have strong torque vectoring traits and also a level of oversteer, for drivers who desire to chance their hand a bit of track day drifting.
