Mercedes-Benz will be expanding its 2021 S-Class lineup Down Under later this year with the introduction of two new variants of the flagship saloon.

The first is the S580 L 4Matic and is powered by the twin-turbo M176 V8 that delivers 370 kW (503 PS / 496 HP) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque. It is backed by a 48V mild-hybrid system that adds 15 kW (20 PS / 20 HP) and 200 Nm (148 lb-ft) for short periods of time, and is mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission and 4Matic all-wheel drive.

Adding 110 mm (4.3 in) to the wheelbase of the S450 4Matic, the S580 L 4Matic brings standard Nappa leather upholstery, an MBUX augmented reality HUD, thicker windows that reflect infrared light, active multi-contour front seats with massage, and others. The list can be enhanced with the optional Burmester sound system and a fully active suspension. These add up to the comprehensive specification of the S450, which includes a 12.8-inch touchscreen display with fingerprint scanner, a wireless smartphone charging pad, a sliding glass panoramic sunroof, power-assisted door closing, and a generous array of safety gear.

With greater refinement, even more rear seat space, luxury appointments and more power, the Mercedes-Maybach S680 4Matic uses the brand’s bi-turbo’d M279 V12, with 463 kW (629 PS / 621 HP) and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft), a nine-speed auto, all-wheel drive, adaptive suspension and rear-wheel steering.

It boasts a 180 mm (7.1 in) longer wheelbase over the standard versions and brings rear comfort doors, exclusive Nappa leather upholstery, rear-seat entertainment, a Burmester premium audio, adaptive ambient lighting, heated seats and armrests up front, woodgrain in Nappa steering wheel, a TV tuner, DAB+ digital radio, and wood trim.

The model is distinguished by the specific grille with vertical bars, 20-inch forge alloy wheels and two-tone paint finishes available as an option.

The manufacturer’s recommended retail price of the S580 L 4Matic is AU$329,900 (US$255,262), while the Maybach S680 4Matic starts at AU$565,800 (US$437,791).
