Mercedes-AMG G 63 4×4² Issues Stop-Drive Warning

Mercedes-AMG G63 4×4² or 4×4 Squared is objectively a very capable SUV. Now though, 278 of them from the 2022 model year need to make a very pedestrian trip to the dealer. It turns out that the rear axle transmission housing might not be as strong as once thought.

According to a new filing with the NHTSA, Mercedes-AMG G63 4×4² vehicles have a rear axle differential housing that can break. In the event that one does, the problem could be as simple as an oil leak or as severe as fracturing of the housing and a loss of propulsion. Because the risk level is unpredictable, Mercedes-AMG is telling its affected customers to stop driving their 2022 G63 4×4².

According to the automaker, it launched an investigation based on internal testing showing a fracture of the housing in question. Around that same time, it worked through analyzing the failure with the supplier and it received the first cases from the field that were reported from outside of the USA. It has yet to receive any reports of third-party damages or injuries as a result of this condition.

Interestingly, Mercedes-AMG doesn’t know exactly what’s causing the root issue. Since it’s uncertain of that root cause, it’s simply requesting that owners stop driving their G-Class and get it towed to the dealer. Towing and loaner vehicles, where available, will be offered at no cost says Mercedes. Once at the dealer, a trained service tech will inspect the rear axle differential housing and replace parts as necessary.

Dealers were made aware of the recall on December 17th. Customers who are uncertain of whether or not their G-Class qualifies for the recall can call the NHTSA or their local dealer. Of course, if they don’t have the super-special 4×4 Squared version of the already very special AMG G63 then there’s nothing to worry about.

In case it’s not widely known, the Squared portion of this super-SUV’s name refers to the fact that it has portal axles instead of normal ones. It’s ironic that this very off-road-focused modification has now become its achilles heel.

Thankfully, Mercedes is making it right. G63 4×4 Squared owners can rejoice knowing that they’ll be free to go hardcore off-roading again soon. Or they can just park them in the garage and never use them as they were intended (now, with fewer oil leaks).
