Mercedes-Benz has a hidden gem in the C208, and we think the CLK430 and CLK55 are future classics.

Mid-size coupes from Mercedes have always been a bit of a sweet spot. The C124 300 CE is a sweetheart of a car, and paved the way for the C208. But what made the 208 much different was that it is based primarily on the 202 C-class, even though it is designed like the W210 E-class.

That specific detail is what makes the C208 a near perfect car to have as a modern classic. The age requirement is met, however it is modern enough to be daily driven. And since many parts interchange with the C-class, it’s hardly expensive to own, either. We feel this unique combination makes the C208 a must-have. Especially if we focus primarily on two models – the CLK 430, and CLK 55.
The ink had hardly dried on the deal between Mercedes and AMG by the time the CLK 55 was in the showrooms. As a follow up to the extremely successful C43, the CLK used an even bigger and more punchy 5.5 V8, shared with the E 55 AMG. Time has been kind to these cars, as the combination of N/A M113 engine and 722.6 gearbox is widely known for its longevity. Strangely, values never really held. What that means for you and I is that we can have a big V8 AMG for quite little money. The main difference here from other depreciating AMG’s is that this one is genuinely reliable.

Want to save even more coin but still have the soundtrack? The CLK 430 is a great option. And if you really think about it, it’s a C43 AMG in disguise. Both the CLK 430 and C43 use a 4.3 liter version of the M113. However, the CLK does run with a 28 horsepower deficit to the AMG. Additionally, C43 AMG values are appreciating, and CLK 430 values most certainly are not.
This example you see here was found on Facebook Marketplace for $4,000. You can certainly find them for less, but the general price range of a well-kept CLK 430 still seems to be under $7,000. You could find a CLK 320 as well, but when the price gap is almost non-existent, why not just go for more power? That’s what we’d do.
