Mercedes is discontinuing one of the PHEV versions of the S-Class from June 2024. The Mercedes S 580 e in short and long versions will go out of production, but the 4Matic version will still be available to buy.
The Plug-in hybrid Mercedes S 580 e in the short and long versions will only be produced up to and including June 2024. However, the 4Matic versions of the same model will remain in production, as will the Mercedes S 450 e, which is only available with rear-wheel drive.
The Mercedes-Maybach S 580 e-version will also continue to be available. The Mercedes-Maybach S Class PHEV is only available in the rear-wheel drive version (184,807 euro) and not in the 4Matic all-wheel drive version.
The Mercedes S-Class currently has three PHEV versions:
– The standard and long-wheelbase S 450 e equipped with a 3-litre/299 PS, inline 6-cylinder engine, and a 150 PS electric motor, the system delivering a total of 408 PS and 650 Nm. Price 127,318/131,602 euros.
– S 580 e standard and long wheelbase equipped with a 3-litre/367 PS inline 6-cylinder engine and a 150 PS electric motor, the system delivering a total of 510 PS and 750 Nm. Price 137,195/140,884 euro
– S 580 e 4Matic with standard and long wheelbase equipped with a 3-litre/367 PS inline 6-cylinder engine and a 150 PS electric motor, the system delivers a total of 510 PS and 750 Nm. Price 141,003/144,692 euro
As you can see, the price difference between the Mercedes S 580 e and the S 580 e 4Matic is quite small, being only around 4,000 euros. Therefore, Mercedes’ decision to drop the S 580 e-version probably has to do with the low demand, as customers who buy the more powerful S 580 e version mostly opt for all-wheel drive.
Those who want a more affordable model have the lower-powered rear-wheel drive version of the S 450 e available.
Following the introduction of weight and emissions pollution charges in some European countries, sales of Mercedes S-Class models with PHEV technology have increased substantially. In addition, the new larger battery with a gross capacity of 28.6 kWh gives a WLTP electric range of 117 km, allowing the S-Class PHEV models to travel electrically in congested areas of big cities.
