Buying a brand-new EQS has become more affordable in Australia, with Mercedes expanding the family with the EQS 450 4Matic. The Benz model joins the already-available Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4Matic+, and it is available to order now, with deliveries expected to commence next month (September 2023).
Priced from AU$219,900 (US$141,714), the new Mercedes-Benz EQS 450 4Matic undercuts the AMG EQS 53 4Matic+ by AU$107,175 (US$69,069). It features dual motors and an electric all-wheel drive system, enjoying a combined 265 kW or 360 ps/355 hp and 800 Newton-meters (590 lb-ft) of torque.
Mercedes says the 0 to 100 kph (0 to 62 mph) acceleration is a 5.6-second affair in the 450 4Matic, which has an enthusiastic NEDC-rated autonomy of up to 664 kilometers (413 km) with the 107.8 kWh battery pack fully charged. The battery supports AC and DC charging, with up to 22 kW and 200 kW, respectively.
Besides the eAWD and the punchy all-quiet powertrain, it also gets standard rear-ale steering of up to 4.5 degrees for enhanced responsiveness during high-speed cornering and improved maneuverability at low speeds with a reduced turning radius. The driver assistance bundle comprises the active traffic assist, active lane change assist, active steering assist, active lane keeping assist, active distance assist, traffic sign assist, pre-safe impulse side accident preparation, and several other gizmos.
Featuring the AMG Line exterior, with a sportier front bumper, fatter side skirts, and a rear diffuser, the EQS 450 4Matic rides on 21-inch multi-spoke alloys signed by the Affalterbach brand. On the inside, it comes with a Nappa leather-wrapped steering wheel and has the standard Rear Seat Package with upholstered cushions, luxury headrests, and electrically-adjustable backrests. The Comfort front seats are on deck, and it also gets a wireless charging pad on the center console.
As for the onboard gear, Mercedes mentions the four-zone climate control, front seats with heating and cooling functions, and a glass panoramic sliding roof. Stuff such as the active ambient lighting with a 64-color choice, the MBUX navigation with augmented reality, Burmester 3D surround sound system featuring 15 speakers, Digital Light headlights with adaptive high beams, and active park assist with parktronic and a 360-degree camera are also included.
Boasting upgraded looks and additional gear, the Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4Matic+ sits at the top of the EQS family Down Under and brings more power to the party. This model enjoys a total of 484 kW (658 ps/649 hp) and has 950 Nm (701 lb-ft) of torque on tap. With the AMG Performance Package, which is an option, these numbers increase to 560 kW (761 ps/750 hp) and 1,020 Nm (752 lb-ft). The official spec sheet reveals that it can sprint to 100 kph (62 mph) in 3.4 seconds, maxing out at up to 155 mph (250 kph).
