Mercedes-Benz is taking an axe to its entry-level lineup and eliminating three different models. One of the few survivors will be the CLA and spy photographers have snapped the redesigned four-door coupe undergoing testing.
Since the prototype is dressed in heavy camouflage and outfitted with temporary lighting units, there isn’t much to see. However, the sleek styling will carryover as the model sports a rakish windscreen that flows into a sloping roof.
Despite the design déjà vu, the CLA adopts slightly slab-sided bodywork and new flush-mounted door handles. They’re joined by an angular shoulder line and a relatively plain rear end that lacks exhaust cut outs as at least one of the prototypes was electric.
Mercedes is slated to provide a preview later this year and the company has already confirmed “Entry Luxury” models will ride on the new MMA platform. The architecture is slated to be launched in 2024 and be accompanied by the new MB.OS (Mercedes-Benz Operating System).
Little is else is known about the CLA at this point, but it’s expected to be offered with internal combustion engines as well as plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains. Previous reports have also suggested we can expect another CLA Shooting Brake, although this could be the last one as Mercedes is reportedly gearing up to phase out wagons late this decade.
