Some say the most luxurious version of the GLS is not a real Maybach as it builds on the regular Benz. And who are we to say otherwise? After all, it’s the same when it comes to the Benz, AMG, and Maybach versions of the S-Class flagship sedan.
 

As a result, those who want a brand-new luxury SUV (it’s actually a crossover) often choose the Bentley Bentayga or the Rolls-Royce Cullinan. But the truth is that the former shares its nuts and bolts with the Volkswagen Touareg and every other large high-rider developed under the VW Group’s roof. And yes, that also includes the Lamborghini Urus and the Audi RS Q8, as well as the Porsche Cayenne, Audi Q7, and so on.
 
So, if you want one that’s truly built as a luxury cruiser, boasting that impressive magic carpet ride, you’d be left with the Rolls-Royce Cullinan. The British automaker’s first venture into the crossover realm officially started in 2018, which is when the high-rider’s first iteration entered production in the United Kingdom, at the Goodwood factory. The Cullinan was facelifted (Series II) in 2024, and if you forgot, it is based on the same architecture as the Phantom, Ghost, and Spectre.
 
Thus, neither of these three is a real SUV, but a crossover, and we have nothing against them. As it happens, it may seem like we are also against the Mercedes-Maybach GLS and the Bentley Bentayga, but we’re not, as each one represents something special for its respective automotive brand and its customers. So, no matter which of these is your favorite, you should always choose with your heart, assuming you have the finances, as all three are extremely expensive.
 

Now, since this story is about one Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 that we just came across as it was searching for a new home on the World Wide Web, we will remind you that this model costs $180,000 brand-new. Actually, it’s more than that, as this is the MSRP of the latest model year in the United States of America and does not include the destination charge or the dealer fees. Spec it up with a few options, and it will easily step over the $200K line.
 
Do you know what powers the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600? If you said a V8 engine, then you know your three-pointed star cars from the new age. It is a bi-turbocharged unit with a 4.0-liter displacement, which develops 538 pound-feet (730 Nm) of torque and 550 brake horsepower (558 ps/410 kW). The GLS 600 is a big and heavy boy, so the fact that it still reaches 60 mph (97 kph) from a standstill in just 4.8 seconds is very impressive.
 
Want a more agile GLS? In that case, you will have to pick the AMG. The model is called the Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 and is seven-tenths of a second faster than the Maybach. Still, it probably hasn’t been abused that much, as it is still in a very nice overall condition. It is presented in a two-tone exterior paint finish with gray on the upper parts of the body and silver on the lower sections, decorated with numerous chrome elements and riding on black alloys. The interior is home to black Nappa leather upholstery and sports pretty much everything one could expect to find in a modern luxury crossover.
 
There is some wear on the seats, yet other than that, we cannot see any other flaws with this 2023 Mercedes-Maybach GLS. As for the asking price, it is a very decent (in our opinion) $127,980. This makes it about as expensive as a regular Mercedes-Benz GLS, in the 580 4Matic configuration, and this still is a lot of car for the money that should make its future owner happy.
 
Now, if you had well over $100,000 to blow on a luxury cruiser with plenty of space for the family and a generous ground clearance, would you buy this used Maybach? I would, as it sounds like a better proposal overall than the Benz, if you don’t factor in the higher maintenance costs for the simple reason that it’s a Maybach.
