Some say the only reason to buy a Mercedes-Maybach GLS is because you cannot afford a Rolls-Royce Cullinan. However, certain people would rather have the three-pointed star brand’s luxury SUV than something else, and that’s probably the case for this NFL athlete.
His name? Charvarius Ward, a 29-year-old cornerback for the Indianapolis Colts, who had his eyes set on a Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 SUV. However, he couldn’t have rolled around in a stock copy, so he turned to a company called Stars in the Ceiling, whose previous work we have been covering for quite a while.
The luxury SUV in question features a Maybach-typical bi-tone exterior. In this case, it mixes black on the lower parts of the body with silver on the upper parts, and since the professional athlete liked this color combo, he decided to keep it, only asking for a protection film. The OEM wheels were replaced with new ones that have a larger diameter and a flashier pattern, and the windows were tinted.
According to the tuner, the upholstery is custom. The pictured Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 features a starlight headliner that was also added post-production and comes with the typical flashy ambient lighting one can find in pretty much every modern Mercedes. However, it appears that this feature was enhanced on the luxury SUV, turning it basically into a nightclub on wheels in lowlight conditions.
The tuner did not say anything about the powertrain, so it likely carries over without any oily upgrades. If you forgot, this model features a 4.0-liter bi-turbo V8 with mild-hybrid tech and enjoys 550 brake horsepower (558 ps/410 kW) and 538 pound-feet (730 Nm) of torque. The output is available between 6,000 and 6,500 rpm, and the thrust at 2,500 rpm, enabling 0-60 mph (0 to 97 kph) in just 4.8 seconds, which is not bad at all for a luxury-focused SUV that weighs a lot.
We cannot tell you how much the NFL athlete paid for the modifications, as the quoted tuning company hasn’t revealed anything about the Benjamins, though we reckon it was likely a lot of money. After all, the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 is far from being affordable, as it is accompanied by an MSRP of $178,450 in the United States of America, and that’s before any options one might check on the list, as well as dealer fees, and the destination charge.
Not everyone is a fan of tuned luxury SUVs, or other modified vehicles, for that matter. However, this Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 does not look bad at all with the aftermarket bits and pieces, and we think it would have been even prettier with a set of disc-like alloys. Still, we dig the makeover, but the question is, do you?
