Respected German marque Mercedes-Benz introduced us to a new E-Class recently, and we’ve been waiting for the automaker to confirm whether or not AMG variants of the sedan and E-Class All-Terrain wagon will be sold in the USA. Now Mercedes has confirmed the AMG E53 Sedan for the US market, and it will be arriving with a hybrid engine making 577 combined horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. These updates give the potent four-door the ability to travel on electricity alone at speeds of up to 87 mph while enabling a sub-four-second sprint to 60 mph with the engine fully fired up. Here’s what you can expect from the new plug-in hybrid Mercedes-AMG E53.
When Is The 2025 Mercedes-AMG E53 Coming Out?
The Mercedes-AMG E53’s release date is set for later this year; the automaker says cars will arrive at dealerships sometime in the third quarter of 2024.
2025 Mercedes-AMG E53 Estimated Price and Competition
There’s no word on a price for the 2025 Mercedes-AMG E53 just yet, but we can expect it to start a fair bit higher than regular E-Class trims. Considering the general increase between base Mercedes variants and their AMG counterparts is around $10k to $15k – and the base E-Class has a $64,850 MSRP – it’s obvious that the AMG derivative will be priced upwards of $80k. The outgoing ICE model had an $81,300 starting price, and an increase over that is also to be expected.
Rivals are a mixed bag, with the upcoming BMW 5 Series plug-in hybrid model said to cost in the mid-$70k region and offer 483 hp and a 0-62 time of 4.3 seconds. There’s no plug-in competitor from Audi at this stage, but a cheaper full-size PHEV that’s often overlooked is the Volvo S90 Recharge. It comes with 455 hp, 38 miles of electric range, and a price tag that starts at around $70k.
Mercedes says there will be a special ‘Edition 1’ model for MY2025 with exclusive paints and graphics, but pricing for this variant hasn’t been confirmed either.
New Mercedes-AMG E53 Exterior and Colors
The updates to the E-Class range carry over to the exterior of the new Mercedes-AMG E53 sedan, which is further set apart from lesser E-Class models with AMG styling. The 2025 AMG E53 has wider front fenders – almost a half-inch wider in comparison to regular E-Class models – and of course, it bears the AMG-specific radiator grille with vertical slats, which are illuminated as standard.
There is a unique front fascia with large air intakes that have horizontal slats and a central A-wing. The lower air inlet directs airflow, and external openings for the intakes are mounted on the wheel arch. Of course, the Mercedes-AMG E53 hybrid has the appropriate badging on the front fenders and at the rear.
With flush-mounted door handles and AMG-specific side skirts, the smooth and horizontally-connected LED taillights advance the slippery feel of the car. The taillights feature star-motif graphics. An AMG spoiler lip and rear fascia with a diffuser are testimony to the sporting nature of the sedan, also highlighted by a pair of dual exhaust outlets at the back.
Available paint colors for the Mercedes-AMG E53 haven’t been specified, but the special Edition 1 models will be available only in Manufaktur Moonlight White Magno with black graphics. As standard, the AMG E53 will ride on 20-inch wheels and the Edition 1 on 21s with a black finish. 21-inch wheels are available optionally.
Mercedes-AMG E53 Dimensions
The 2025 Mercedes-AMG E53 sedan’s dimensions have not been published, but we do have the dimensions for the normal E-Class; for the most part, these will carry over. This includes a wheelbase of 116 inches and a total length of 194 inches. Whether the latter figure is slightly more due to the AMG body kit remains to be seen. We know it’s a tad wider, so we expect a width of around 75.5 inches. Height will likely remain in the 58-inch region.
Curb weight hasn’t been specified for any of the E-Class models at the time of writing, but we expect the plug-in model to be the heaviest, tipping the scales over 4,200 pounds.
Mercedes-AMG E53 Powertrain and Performance
The engine in the Mercedes-AMG E53 is an AMG-enhanced 3.0-liter turbocharged unit paired to a permanently excited synchronous motor; the 161-hp electric motor is integrated into the automatic transmission. This plug-in hybrid setup allows the E53 to merge high-level performance with superior efficiency.
Combined specs from this setup come to 577 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, sent to the 4Matic+ fully variable all-wheel-drive system. The improvements are courtesy of a new twin-scroll exhaust-gas turbocharger with a higher boost pressure (up from 16 psi to 21.8 psi) and updated software. The powertrain also provides a boost of up to 604 hp in short bursts when using the Race Start function – this results from the 28.6-kWh battery that reserves some juice specifically for additional oomph when driving the car in a spirited way.
This all translates to the Mercedes-AMG E53’s 0-60 sprint time of 3.7 seconds with launch control and a top speed that is electronically limited to 174 mph. One of the benefits of the plug-in powertrain is that it can be driven on electric power alone at speeds of up to 87 mph. In fact, the E53 starts up in the silent ‘Electric’ mode by default, with seven AMG Dynamic Select drive programs in total to choose from.
Standard on the new AMG E53 is active rear-axle steering for added agility and stability, as well as AMG Ride Control suspension with adaptive adjusting damping bespoke to the E53. Engineers have worked hard to balance acoustic insulation with sporty driving dynamics in this regard. The body shell has also been revised for more structural rigidity with strut bracing between the front suspension mounts and additional rear axle struts.
Estimated Gas Mileage, Range, Charging, and Battery Life
There aren’t any official fuel economy figures for the Mercedes-AMG E53 just yet, but we know the automaker has tried to make it potent and efficient in equal measure. An improvement over the outgoing model’s 21/29/24 mpg city/highway/combined figures isn’t unreasonable, although the new car will likely be heavier.
Electric range has not been confirmed yet (a claimed 62 miles on the WLTP should be less on the EPA cycle), but the automaker says the E53 comes standard with an 11-kW onboard AC charger as well as a 60-kW DC fast charger. The latter enables a charge from 10% – 80% in just 20 minutes. Regenerative braking with three levels of recuperation (including one-pedal driving functionality) can also replenish the battery as you drive.
Mercedes-AMG E53 Interior and Cargo
Changes to the interior of the Merc-AMG E53 are huge in comparison to the outgoing model, and we loved it in the new E-Class. The design inside the car is supposed to be harmonious, but it may look a little over-the-top in terms of technology to some. New and exclusive to this model year is illuminated trim in grey open-pore ash wood with the AMG logo as standard. Naturally, there is loads of carbon trim to ensure you know this is the AMG variant.
In terms of all that tech, the standard central display is huge and can be augmented by ticking the box for the MBUX Superscreen, which adds a 12.3-inch front passenger display and some additional gadgets. Regardless, the MBUX system features AMG-specific content and hybrid-specific displays and functions such as charging information and range. We expect the most premium sound systems to be on offer, as the standard E-Class offers a 21-speaker Burmester unit with Dolby Atmos that seems appropriate for the halo model.
The seats in the Mercedes-AMG E53 are power-adjustable AMG sport seats as standard, wrapped in MB-Tex/microfiber with model-specific graphics and red contrast stitching. Buyers can choose from optional leather and Nappa variations and switch these out for the AMG Performance Seats. The steering wheel is an AMG Performance unit wrapped in Nappa leather.
Special ‘Edition 1′ models come with a unique interior in black and yellow. Nappa leather will be standard here, with the graphics, contrast stitching, and even the seatbelts rendered in yellow. Carbon fiber trim elements will also show off yellow fibers, and the ambient lighting will emulate the same hue.
Cargo space in the Mercedes-AMG E53 should be in line with the regular models’ 19 cubic feet behind the back row. Inside the cabin, the center console merges with the lower dashboard and contains a bin with a lid as well as cupholders.
