Mercedes-AMG will launch its first full-electric model in 2025. The upcoming Mercedes-AMG GT4 Coupe fully electric will be based on the dedicated AMG.EA electric platform and will co-exist in parallel with the AMG GT4-door coupe conventional version.

Mercedes-AMG will launch its first fully-electric model in 2025, in the form of a Mercedes-AMG GT4 door coupe. This car will be the first model to be based on the new AMG.EA platform, which will be used for future AMG models and will take over the design of the Mercedes Vision AMG concept presented in 2022 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

It will feature a retractable spoiler, flush door handles, and a split rear window.

The Mercedes-AMG GT4-door coupe electric would be a competitor to the Porsche Taycan, Audi e-tron GT, and Lucid Air.

Mercedes currently has three AMG electric models, but these models are based on the EVAII platform used in the EQE and EQS: the AMG EQE 43 4Matic+ (476 PS), AMG EQE 53 4Matic (625 PS) and AMG EQS 53 4Matic+ (658 PS). The new Mercedes-AMG GT4-door electric coupe will be completely different as it will use the new AMG.EA platform, which has been designed specifically for high-performance models.

The new platform has two main features:
– It will use axial-flow electric motors produced by Yasa, the British high-performance electric motor company acquired by Mercedes in 2021. These motors have a higher power and torque density than the radial-flow electric motors currently used and will be produced by Mercedes in Berlin, Germany. At the same time, these engines are lighter and more compact, and Yasa boss Tim Woolmer confirmed to British magazine Autocar that such an engine weighs just 24 kg and is capable of producing 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) and 474 PS (480 bhp).
This means that a model powered by two such engines could achieve 1000 PS and 1600 Nm (1,600 lb-ft) while now the most powerful Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4Matic model developed 658 PS and 950 Nm (761 PS and 1,050 Nm with the AMG Dynamic Plus package).
– will use the new higher energy density batteries developed in cooperation with Sila. Sila has developed battery cells in which the anode is made of a high percentage of silicon, which replaces the graphite at the negative pole of the battery. Thus, Sila promises an increase in energy density by 20-40%, which means that the new battery will have an energy density of 800 Wh/l compared to 500 Wh/l at present.

Propulsion inspired by Mercedes Vision One-Eleven?
For the moment, no more data is known about the powertrain, but a clue could be given by the Mercedes Vision One-Eleven concept, which has two Yasa electric motors, located at the rear axle. Being very light and compact, the Yasa motors do not take up much space and can be placed very close to the wheels.

However, this placement of both motors at the rear axle suggests that future Mercedes-AMG sports models are likely to be non-all-wheel drive.

Exterior design from Vision AMG Concept, interior from Vision One-Eleven
Instead, the design will not be inspired by that of the Mercedes Vision One-Eleven but by that of the Mercedes Vision AMG concept. Mercedes has announced since 2022 that the Vision AMG concept offers a vision of future Mercedes-AMG electric models.

The Vision AMG concept fits perfectly in terms of proportions with the current Mercedes-AMG GT4-door coupe having 5,100 mm length and a wheelbase of 3,000 mm (AMG GT4-door coupe 5,054 mm length, 2,951 mm wheelbase).

“The Vision AMG shows in spectacular style what electrification could look like at Mercedes-AMG while staying true to the brand aesthetic. The study’s extreme proportions create fascination and passion for performance – that’s what AMG is all about”, declares Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer of Mercedes-Benz Group AG.

Instead, it looks like the interior will be inspired by that of the Mercedes Vision One-Eleven, with a narrow display that will span the entire width of the car.

The Mercedes-AMG GT4-door electric coupe will launch in 2025 and, for a while, it will be produced in parallel with the current generation with conventional and PHEV engines.
