Mercedes-AMG Electric Sedan Could Have Well Over 1,000-HP

Mercedes-AMG is readying an all-electric alternative to the GT 63 4-Door Coupe to rival the Tesla Model S, Lucid Air, Porsche Taycan, and Audi e-tron GT. It is expected to have even more power than the current hybrid GT 63 S E Performance with its 831 hp.
 

This new model will be developed from the ground up by Mercedes-AMG and ride on a new architecture known as AMG.EV. This platform will allow the firm to develop and build low-slung EVs that are powered by Yasa’s axial-flux electric motors.
 
Mercedes-AMG remains tight-lipped about specifications for the car but the boss of Yasa has revealed to Autocar that one of its 24 kg (53 lbs) electric motors delivers 480 hp and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque. Combine two and you’ll have almost 1,000 hp and opt for a tri-motor setup like the Model S Plaid, Air Sapphire, and the forthcoming three-motor version of the Taycan and there would be over 1,400 hp. Set to make the emerging market for uber-powerful electric sedans even more exciting are electric versions of the BMW M3 and Audi RS6.
 
The German carmaker offered the world a glimpse of a new electric sedan last year with the Vision AMG Concept. Autocar claims that this concept served as a close preview of the production model’s overall shape and size. This concept measures 5,100 mm (200.7 inches) long, making it slightly longer than the current GT 4-Door Coupe and 147 mm (5.7 inches) longer than a Porsche Taycan.
 
A key element of the new sedan will be its battery pack. Eager to ensure that the car is as low-slung as possible, Mercedes-AMG will use a slim battery pack in the floor that uses silicon anodes produced by U.S. firm Sila.
 
An electric alternative to the GT 4-Door Coupe won’t be the only model underpinned by the AMG.EV platform, Mercedes-Benz head of exterior design Robert Lesnik told Autocar.
 
“The AMG.EA platform provides a lot of scope design-wise. We’re able to go much lower than with the EVA platform,” he noted. “I can’t give too much away but we don’t develop new platforms for just one model. The Vision AMG is a start. It is safe to say there will be other AMG-specific electric models in the future.”
