Mercedes-Benz is working on the E-Class L, a version specially designed for the Chinese market. It may still be far from the S-Class in style and equipment, but it’s not that far off in terms of proportions.

The car showed up in photos that China’s Ministry of Industry and Technology Information (MIIT) made public, long before the official reveal of the car. We’re still only a month away from the European debut of the standard E-Class, which will borrow the front and rear end design to the L version.

The long-wheelbase E-Class will measure – if the figures are correct – 5,092 mm (200.4 inches) in length, 1,880 mm (74 inches) in width, and 1,493 mm (58.8 inches) in height. Meanwhile, it will sport a wheelbase of 3,094 mm (121.8 inches), which is 133 mm longer than in the standard E and which will translate into more legroom for the rear passengers. The sedan is obviously one for those who prefer to be chauffeured, but would rather have something smaller than the S-Class flagship.

These figures would make it 143 mm (5.6 inches) longer than the standard business sedan, but still shorter than the S-Class, which is 5,179 mm (203.9 inches) long. This is how Mercedes-Benz is going to avoid internal model cannibalization in the Chinese market.

The E-Class L will also be cheaper than the S-Class. Customers will be able to choose one of the two versions, both powered by 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engines with either 201 HP (204 PS) or 255 HP (258 PS).

Expected to bring the E-Class L to the Shanghai Motor Show last month, Mercedes-Benz will most likely reveal it this summer. The model will roll off the assembly line of the Being Benz factory and will only be available in China. That is where it will have to deal with competitors such as the BMW 5 Series Li, the Audi A6 L, and the Jaguar XFL.
