Next-gen Mercedes Benz S preview. Design based on Vision Iconic language. So he remains the flagship!
After a few stale years in terms of design, which have been plagued by egg-shaped electric models and classic nameplates that were easily confounded, Mercedes-Benz is finally shaking up the styling department with something new. Not necessarily better, but at least it’s a revolution.
Right on cue, the second-generation BMW iX3 compact luxury EV crossover SUV introduced the fresh Neue Klasse design and architecture for the Bavarian automaker. Their rivals from Stuttgart also unleashed the Mercedes-Benz GLC with EQ Technology, also an all-electric premium CUV. Its most important traits are the great EV powertrain… and a new, pixel-illuminated grille that’s pretty big.
Some will say it’s either humongous or hideous, but love it or hate it, the new signature element isn’t going away soon, and instead, more of the upcoming Mercedes models will adopt and adapt it according to their needs. The detractors might be a little less vocal now, as the premium German automaker has also revealed a companion Vision Iconic concept car that wears the new grille as if it were born with it.
If anyone was disappointed with the way things are going at Mercedes from the design standpoint, the prototype with classic grand tourer coupe proportions probably gave us – yours truly included – a shiver of hope that, in the end, things might turn out to be OK with the new Benz style that consists of a massive vertical grille and LED DRL stars in the headlights and/or taillights.
Of course, this is just a concept – and a very good one, which feels like a Silver Arrow from the past has been updated and made black for Darth Vader, signaling that it’s actually coming from the future. It remains to be seen how the new design era translates into series-production models for the German automaker. Well, as always, the parallel universes of vehicular CGI are a step ahead of everyone, thanks to the clever work of a member of the imaginative guild of digital car content creators.
More precisely, Sugar Chow, the virtual artist better known as “sugardesign_1” on social media, has decided to create a CGI presentation of his vision for the next flagship sedan from Mercedes, fully based on the new styling traits exhibited by the Vision Iconic concept car. Thus, meet the unofficial, hypothetical Mercedes-Benz S-Class design project for the next generation of the beloved limousine.
The W223 Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been around since 2020, and the seventh generation of the full-size luxury sedan still hasn’t gone through the classic mid-cycle refresh procedure. That means one of two things – either Mercedes plans a very long production cycle and the facelift is just around the corner, or they will cut it short and bring an all-new iteration in just a few years.
Either way, they now have a great suggestion from this pixel master – to integrate the Vision Iconic traits into a four-door format and make the Mercedes-Benz S-Class utterly timeless. We also hope they can offer both EV and ICE models with this grille design – those slats look perfect for incorporating motorized elements to let the gasoline engine breathe when needed.
So, what do you think? Should they hurry up and refresh the W223 Mercedes-Benz S-Class while it remains popular in Europe, North America, and China, or scramble to put into production an all-new iteration based on the fresh, cool, and timeless Vision Iconic design ethos?
