The current-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class is now in its fifth year. After receiving a slight facelift last year, the range-topping Merc gets another update from Stuttgart. The S-Class sedan is now smarter and more customizable than before, with enhancements found in its MBUX infotainment system, autonomous driving technology, artificial intelligence integration, and the Manufaktur customization program.
One of the major updates to the W223 S-Class is found in its Drive Pilot SAE Level 3 autonomous driving system, which can now reach speeds of up to 59 mph, an increase from the previous 40 mph limit. Drivers can legally engage in other activities while in this mode, including working and watching movies.
However, it’s still limited on German highways for now, though the automaker has been testing the system stateside since 2023. Merc is also testing its turquoise-colored turn signals with the 2025 S-Class – both in the US and Germany – that is used when Drive Pilot is engaged.
Faster Drive Pilot, AI-Powered MBUX
The S-Class’ MBUX infotainment system has also been upgraded for the new model year. Now integrated with ChatGPT, the system uses Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service for smarter voice assistance and real-time responses.
Google’s satellite view also offers a high-resolution bird’s-eye navigation experience, while entertainment options, particularly in the rear seats, have been added, including the YouTube Web App and Sony’s RIDEVU streaming service.
Mercedes-Benz has also expanded the options for its Manufaktur customization program. Expanding from last year’s additions, over 50 additional exterior paint colors have been added to the list, while 25 interior design choices – from handcrafted textiles to premium leather combinations and exquisite wood inlays – are now available worldwide.
Bespoke interior elements and handcrafted paint finishes are also available from the Sindelfingen factory.
The New Mercedes-Benz S-Class Edition
Apart from the updates to the model, Mercedes-Benz is also introducing the S-Class Edition. Offered with AMG Line and Night package, this special model comes with exclusive paint options like Manufaktur Night Black Magno and Opalite White Bright.
Other premium touches include Nappa leather, illuminated Mercedes-Benz door sills, Burmester 3D Surround Sound System, 20-inch AMG wheels, and Digital Light feature with projection function. Its MBUX infotainment also displays a digital edition emblem to mark the Edition’s exclusivity.
There isn’t any update to the S-Class’s powertrain options, but that’s expected since this isn’t a major revamp. Mercedes-Benz hasn’t disclosed when the new S-Class will roll out in Europe, but since the US is already set with its MY2025 lineup, it will likely get the smarter version of the luxury sedan by the end of the year for the 2026 model year.
