When Mercedes-AMG unveiled the SLS in 2010, it marked something new for Affalterbach-based tuner. It was the first model fully developed by AMG, not merely tuned by it. The car revived the legendary gullwing design of the 1950s 300 SL while introducing a front mid-engine layout, rear-mounted transmission, and a naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 that defined the model’s personality. Production ended in 2014 after a limited global run of under 2,000 coupes, making each example a rare collector’s piece.
Now, one of these cars – a 2012 SLS AMG finished in AMG Imola Gray over Designo Classic Red Exclusive leather – is up for grabs on Bring a Trailer. Showing only 5,000 miles, it presents as a time capsule from an era before downsizing and hybridization, offering enthusiasts a glimpse of AMG’s most analog supercar.
563 Analog Horses a Hand-Built V8
This example was originally sold through Mercedes-Benz of Fort Myers in Florida and acquired by the current owner in 2021. Power comes from the hand-built 6.2-liter M159 V8 producing 563 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, sent to the wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transaxle and limited-slip differential. Recent maintenance includes new spark plugs, air filters, and an oil change just last month.
It rides on staggered 19- and 20-inch five-spoke alloy wheels with fresh Michelin tires and red AMG-branded calipers clamping cross-drilled rotors. Inside, the cabin features heated power-adjustable AMG sport seats, COMAND infotainment with navigation, and a mix of Alcantara and leather surfaces. The sale includes the original window sticker, manuals, service records, an AMG-branded car cover, and a two-piece luggage set – all under a clean Massachusetts title.
Another Shot at AMG’s Greatest Hit
This isn’t the first SLS AMG to appear on Bring a Trailer this month. Earlier, a rarer 2015 SLS AMG GT Final Edition with even lower mileage crossed the site, attracting strong bids. For those who missed out, this 2012 example offers a second opportunity to secure one of AMG’s most celebrated creations, which even comes with an electric version.
As of this writing, bidding sits at $196,000, with four days remaining in the auction. This listing will likely go over $200,000, so make sure your bank account’s ready if you’re planning for this purchase.
