Mercedes has started reshuffling its lineup, and while some models have already been dropped (ahem, CLS!), others will live on into their next generations. The S-Class flagship sedan is part of the latter category, though it will be a good while until the eighth-gen arrives.
The latest reports indicate that both the S-Class (ICE) and EQS (EV) will be refreshed in 2025 and 2026, respectively, and their mid-cycle updates should keep them appealing for a few more years. Look for the usual front and rear visual revisions, a few tweaks in the cabin, and maybe some beneath the skin, though we wouldn’t hold our breath for the latter.
But what does the future hold for Mercedes’ flagship sedans? Well, it appears that the EQS will drive into the sunset after the mid-cycle refresh, whereas the S-Class will live on into the next decade. However, to make sure that its sole-surviving flagship four-door model remains popular, the three-pointed star brand will reportedly give it both ICE and EV firepower.
It seems that the next-gen Mercedes S-Class and its Maybach and AMG versions (there’s no reason to suspect these won’t live on) will utilize the MB.EA Large architecture—you know, the one that was supposed to be canceled. It appears that the battery-electric S-Class will be based on this construction, whereas its internal combustion counterpart might use an updated version of the current MRA.
Visually, the two models should look about the same, and that’s no surprise, given that Mercedes has already applied this strategy to the latest G-Wagen. Mind you, given that the next-gen S-Class (ICE and EV) is still a few good years away, with the rumor mill speaking of a possible introduction in 2030, chances are the design is far from being finalized. Thus, we couldn’t tell you what it will look like inside and out, nor how much power it will have in its different configurations.
Fueled by this information that the next-gen Mercedes S-Class might launch with both EV and ICE power, the rendering crowd has started imagining what it might look like. The latest digital illustration portraying this model came from vburlapp on Instagram and shows an unrealistic take on the flagship sedan. The CGI car looks like a larger version of the demised CLS due to its sloping roofline, and for the most part, we enjoy the fresh styling.
We certainly wouldn’t complain if Mercedes decides to make the next-gen S-Class look exactly like this, as we support the expansion of the four-door coupe proposals. However, Mercedes won’t go down this route, as the upcoming S-Class will remain a traditional sedan of large proportions with lots of premium touches. But do you like this virtual model as much as we do?
