Luxury land yachts still exist in several companies’ portfolios, and while some claim Rolls-Royce tops the chart, it’s impossible to ignore Bentley and Mercedes-Maybach. The latter brand’s punchiest proposal is called the S 680, and one particular copy recently smiled for the camera.
Mind you, it’s not your run-off-the-mill Mercedes-Maybach S 680, not that there’s anything wrong with that, but one that has been slightly modified. Roadshow International shared these images on social media shortly after New Year’s Eve, revealing some of the tweaks, which may be discreet, yet they make this luxury sedan stand out even more.
According to the quoted company, this vehicle rides on 22-inch wheels that were powder coated in frozen silver to match the car’s overall silver look. It also gets illuminated Maybach logos on the C-pillars, smoked exterior lighting units, nano-ceramic window tint, a two-tone gloss tag frame, and a few other bits and bobs. For a sportier stance, the suspension has been tweaked so the body sits 0.8 inches (20 mm) closer to the road.
The silver bullet luxury land yacht is in the S 680 flavor, meaning that it packs a V12 motor under the hood. It’s a hand-crafted 6.0-liter unit with dual turbos that produces 621 horsepower (630 ps/463 kW) between 5,250 and 5,500 rpm and offers up to 664 pound-foot (900 Nm) of torque at 2,000-4,000 rpm. The engine, paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and 4Matic AWD, hasn’t been modified, yet Roadshow International claims 0-60 mph (0 to 97 kph) takes just 3.0 seconds. However, that is probably a typo, as a stock Mercedes-Maybach S 680 deals with the acceleration in 4.5 seconds.
This Mercedes-Maybach S 680 was recently sold, though interested parties can opt for a brand-new one, which begins at $240,500 in the United States. Factor in the destination charge, tick some boxes on the options list and add the dealer fees, and it’s bound to get more expensive. The 2025 Mercedes-Maybach S 580 is slightly more affordable, carrying an MSRP of $203,500, though instead of a V12 motor, you will have to settle for a bi-turbo V8 in this case.
Power comes from a 4.0L mill that steams out 516 pound-foot (700 Nm) of torque at 2,000-4,000 rpm and 496 horsepower (503 ps/370 kW) at 5,500 rpm. The bi-turbo V8 is also paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and 4Matic all-wheel-drive, just like the superior Mercedes-Maybach S 680, yet since it has less power, it is also slower. The 0 to 60 mph acceleration takes 4.7 seconds in the S 580, which makes it just two-tenths of a second slower than the S 680.
So, is the silver look your new favorite theme for the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class? It probably is for us, as it manages to keep the model’s elegance while adding a little bit of sportiness.
