Mercedes will operate a facelift in 2024 to the Mercedes G-Class, a few months before the introduction of the electric version. The main change: the G 500 will no longer have a V8 engine but a 6-cylinder inline.

The Mercedes G-Class W463 has been on the market since 2018, so it’s time for a facelift. Unlike other Mercedes models, the lifecycle of the G-Class has been unusually long, because only three generations were launched in 45 years.

Discreet exterior changes, new interior
The facelift will not bring significant design changes because as Ola Kallenius, Mercedes CEO, declares, the G-Class is an iconic car and will remain true to the classic off-road layout. There will, however, be cosmetic changes to the front and rear. The radiator grille and bumper will have a new design, and the bonnet will be more contoured. At the rear, the bumper and part of the tailgate are slightly restyled, and the camera has been moved above the number plate.

On the inside, however, there will be a revolution. The Mercedes G-Class will get a completely new dashboard, inspired by the S-Class. This means the G-Class will get a state-of-the-art MBUX multimedia system with an 11.9-inch portrait display and the new digital instrument cluster on a 12.3-inch display.

More power and mild hybrid technology on 48V on all engines
All engines will get a 48V mild hybrid. The only diesel engine remains on offer but will have more power. The Mercedes G 400 d will change its name to Mercedes G 450 d and will have the same OM 656 3-liter inline 6-cylinder engine that will develop 367 PS plus 23 PS from the integrated starter generator of the 48V mild hybrid system compared to 330 PS before.

The G 500 name remains unchanged, but under the bonnet, there will no longer be a 421 PS 4-liter turbocharged V8 engine but a 3-liter inline 6-cylinder engine that will develop 449 PS plus 23 PS from the starter integrated generator. The single V8 engine will be available in the top model Mercedes-AMG G 63. The 4-litre twin-turbo V8 will develop the same 585 PS as before but will be backed by the same 23 PS integrated starter generator of the 48V mild hybrid system.

Given the increase in power and the all-new interior, we expect a price increase. Currently, the G 400 d starts at 118,256 euros, the G 500 starts at 130,204 euros, and the AMG G 63 costs a minimum of 187,246 euros. Mercedes will also introduce an electric version of the G-Class at the end of the summer, which will be called G 580 electric and not EQG.
