Mercedes-AMG G 63 Offroad PRO Lands Down Under To Conquer City & Outback

Mercedes G-Class has always been equal parts war hero and red-carpet celebrity, a contradiction on wheels that somehow works. Now Mercedes-AMG has doubled down on that duality with the G 63 Offroad PRO, and this time the spotlight shines squarely on Australia.

It’s a market launch for a version so specialized that “off-road package” feels like an insult. This is no trim level—it’s a declaration that the G-Wagen belongs as much in the Simpson Desert as in Sydney Harbour’s valet line. Mercedes-AMG calls it a “new variant,” but the Offroad PRO is more of a manifesto: if you’re going to build a tank for billionaires, it had better be able to climb mountains.

The transformation begins beneath its boxy skin. At its heart lies the AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension with active hydraulic roll stabilization, a system that translates to “physics doesn’t scare me.” Larger pistons, expanded pressure reservoirs, and bespoke damper tuning grant the Offroad PRO a remarkably fluid stride over punishing terrain. Axle articulation improves, body roll tightens, and suddenly this brick moves like a ballet dancer with steel-toe boots.

Under the hood, the Offroad PRO retains the ferocious 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine from the standard G63, developing 430 kW (585 hp) and a thunderous 850 Nm of torque. That’s paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and permanent all-wheel drive, meaning the car doesn’t just look ready for desert tracks — it’s built for them.

To further sharpen its grunt, AMG equips the variant with a 48-volt mild-hybrid starter-generator that can add roughly 15 kW and up to 200 Nm of torque on demand, squeezing a 0-100 kph sprint into the mid-4-second range and a top speed around 220-240 kph depending on spec.

AMG didn’t stop there. Two exclusive drive programs redefine its wild side: AMG Traction PRO and AMG Active Balance Control. The first fine-tunes braking torque at each wheel through seven stages, letting drivers adapt for sand, mud, or rock. The second adjusts roll stiffness in LOW, MID, and HIGH settings, reading terrain like a mechanical oracle. Together, they turn the Offroad PRO into a thinking machine on stilts.

Visually, it’s a masterclass in stealth aggression. 20-inch AMG five-twin-spoke alloy wheels, finished in matte black with high-sheen flanges, announce its intent even when parked. They’re wrapped in AMG-specific all-terrain tires ready for Australia’s red dust. PROFESSIONAL-grade mud flaps and a roof luggage rack with walk-on aluminum plates add a touch of expedition practicality, while a rear ladder invites drivers to literally climb their own car.

Inside, the contrast is pure Mercedes. Nappa leather wraps the AMG Performance steering wheel, while the MBUX multimedia system with augmented-reality navigation and Burmester 3D surround sound turn each trail into a symphony of precision and power. Temperature-controlled cupholders, wireless charging, and an array of driver assistance features remind you that this G doesn’t just survive the wild—it civilizes it.

The price for this off-road renaissance is $383,900 (MRLP), available to order now in Australia. That includes GST and Luxury Car Tax but excludes on-road costs. At first glance, it seems audacious—but given the standard G 63 already occupies the $370,000 bracket, the Offroad PRO slots in with surgical logic. You’re paying for hardware, heritage, and head-turning drama.

Crucially, this is a market introduction for Australia, not a global premiere. It marks the first time the Offroad PRO has been officially offered to Australian buyers—a move that feels both inevitable and brilliant. After all, where else on Earth do luxury SUVs need to handle both beach sand and bush tracks before lunchtime?

From a collector’s standpoint, this release creates a new sub-species of G-Wagen for the Australian market. Previous special editions like the “Edition 55” or “Grand Edition” focused on aesthetics; the Offroad PRO leans heavily into function. Its rarity will likely fuel demand among buyers who view the G not just as a vehicle, but as a status instrument and investment.

Historically, Australian AMG G-Class models hold their value with tenacity. Limited supply, high import costs, and an enthusiastic buyer base keep resale values stubbornly high. Examples of the standard G 63 often resell within two years for close to their original sticker price—sometimes higher when spec’d right. Expect the Offroad PRO to follow that trajectory, its production numbers and specialized hardware making it a collector’s magnet the moment it leaves the showroom.

Mercedes-AMG has once again hit the sweet spot between brawn and beauty. The G 63 Offroad PRO is a statement that Australia’s outback and its urban jungles deserve the same level of engineering respect. It’s not about excess for its own sake—it’s about crafting a machine that makes the impossible look civilized.

And that’s why the G-Wagen remains immortal. You can electrify it, digitize it, or dress it in carbon fiber, but nothing replaces the feeling of a hand-built AMG V8 rumbling beneath you as you climb toward the horizon. The G 63 Offroad PRO isn’t just the next chapter in the legend—it’s the Australian edition of freedom on four wheels.
