Colleagues from the German magazine auto motor und sport exclusively drove the new Mercedes EQS 450+ and tell us if the new luxury electric limousine from Mercedes sets new standards in terms of comfort, autonomy and efficiency.

Mercedes caused a sensation with EQS. Everyone is wondering if the Mercedes EQS is more than the electric equivalent of the S-Class or more precisely, is the EQS the best luxury electric limousine?

Colleagues from auto motor und sport magazine answered this question after driving a Mercedes EQS 450+.

Smart navigation
If you plan a route with the MBUX navigation system, it calculates the total time to the destination taking into account the time allocated to charge the battery on the route route if necessary. But if you are not satisfied with the offer of the navigation system, you can change the charging station. And when you reach the charging station you can specify how much you want to charge the battery.

Maximum efficiency
EQS’s battery offers maximum performance at a temperature of 30 degrees. Therefore, the driver must reach this temperature as soon as possible and keep it constant for as long as possible. Although the gearbox has a single gear as in most electric cars, it has transmission oil like any automatic transmission, and the viscosity of the oil is temperature dependent.

Mercedes EQS has synchronous motors with permanent magnet – one motor on the rear axle at EQS 450+ and two motors, one on each axle at EQS 580 4Matic. For increased efficiency, the engines must be cooled and Mercedes uses a water cooling system that cools the rotor. In this way, the Mercedes EQS can accelerate repeatedly without losing performance.

In terms of recuperation the Mercedes EQS 450+ rear-wheel drive model with a 245 kW (333 HP) rear axle engine can recuperate 186 kW. Recuperation takes place up to a deceleration of 5 m / s2.

Aerodynamics
EQS holds the record for the most aerodynamic production model with a Cx of only 0.20. Aerodynamics is more important in electric models than in heat engine cars. In general, electric cars are quieter than those with a thermal motor at low speeds, but at high speeds wind noise and rolling noise disturb the interior atmosphere.

Alexander Bloch, who drove the Mercedes EQS for the first time, says: “I’ve never driven a quieter electric car. EQS is at least two classes above Tesla Model S”.

Range
Mercedes EQS 450+ promises a WLTP range of up to 770 km. The colleague from auto motor und sport magazine planned a long route from Munich to Berlin, ie over 600 km. Taking into account the official range, Mercedes EQS 450+ should reach Berlin without charging due to the battery with a very large capacity of 107.8 kWh.

At highway speeds of 130 km/h, the EQS 450+ consumes between 15 and 16 kWh. So the Munich-Berlin journey can be traveled without stopping. Alexander Bloch drove the 638 km between Munich and Berlin, obtaining a sensational consumption of 15.8 kWh /100 km, reaching Berlin with a range of 48 km. Average speed on the route: 104 km/h.

At the Ionity charging station, Mercedes EQS 450+ charges just with a power of just over 200 kW, more than what manufacturer promised. This means that in 15 minutes the battery is charged for 300 km.
