It may be the car that started the four-door sedan coupe trend, but the Mercedes CLS is on its dying bed. Production will end on August 31, 2023, leaving a gap in its lineup that the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe and the zero-emission EQE and EQS will indirectly fill.
The announcement was made a few months back by a Mercedes US representative, so if you badly need a brand-new CLS in your life, then you should search for that perfectly configured example in existing dealer lots. It’s unknown how many are waiting for their owner, but there should be quite a few of them.
Other Mercedes coupes will follow in its footsteps, and that includes the GT 4-Door, and the sloping-roofed versions of the GLC and GLE, though the latter two will be reportedly dropped after the next generations. The two-door variants of the C-Class and E-Class were already phased off and replaced by the first-ever CLE, and it’s been said that the C-Class and E-Class wagons will be discontinued by the end of the decade. Allegedly due in 2025, the third-gen CLA is said to be the last one to offer a Shooting Brake.
As every gearhead knows, the CLS is a re-bodied version of the E-Class, and the more mainstream model has recently received an entirely new generation. Therefore, it, too, will indirectly fill the void left by the demise of the CLS, which is an Audi A7 and BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe rival. This news has taken the rendering world by storm, as several digital illustrators have released various CGIs depicting what a hypothetical brand-new CLS would look like. The latest that we crossed paths with has hdm.design on Instagram behind it, and it is a very sexy proposal.
It appears to have some things in common with the all-new E-Class, albeit with a few key differences that set it apart. Compared to the outgoing CLS, the one imagined here has slimmed headlamps positioned further up and an AMG-styled grille and front bumper. The hood has similar lines to those of the real thing, and to make it look more modern, they gave it flush-mounted door handles. The side mirrors are on the smaller side, and the sloping roofline behind it, aka the signature trait, gives it that sexy stance. The CGI imagines it with aero wheels, a satin green hue that looks phenomenal on it, several black accents, and a chrome-delete package.
We think this is one of the best unofficial renderings of a hypothetical next-gen Mercedes CLS yet, and it makes us sad to see the iconic nameplate go. Hopefully, the three-pointed star company has prepped one final limited edition for it before it drives away into the sunset, but that seems less likely as days turn into weeks.
