New Mercedes-AMG One Bringing Sexy Concept To Reality

Spy photographers have spotted the all-electric replacement for the Mercedes-AMG GT63 4-Door with less camouflage, and it appears that this new luxury sedan will closely follow the designs of highly efficient electric concepts presented by Mercedes over the last couple of years. Specifically, we’re talking about the hypermiling Mercedes-Benz EQXX Concept and the futuristic Mercedes Vision AMG Concept from early 2022.

There’s also expected to be styling influence from the AMG ONE hypercar, and powertrain influence from yet another concept revealed in recent times (more on that later). The new electric AMG sedan is expected to touch down in 2025, so more camouflage will likely be peeled off development mules soon.

What To Expect
The concepts shown in 2022 were noteworthy for their particularly sleek bodywork, and although these cars still have something of a “jelly bean” shape, they have a lot more depth and beauty than more recent Mercedes EQ EVs. At the front, the headlights are expected to be similar to those on the concepts, depicting the marque’s famous Three-pointed Star, but this prototype is wearing pre-production units with traditional housings. Between these light clusters, a narrow LED strip will add visual width and follow recent trends.

The wheels, however, look like they’re production-ready. The multi-spoke design features blanking plates between every other spoke pair to reduce turbulent airflow down the sides of the car, something that governed the decision to fit flush door handles. However, not all the air must move as quickly as possible; a pair of air-deflecting canards appears on either side of the front fascia. The rear fascia is even further from production-spec and wears a longtail/Kammtail-style appendage that will be far sleeker in final form (the new AC Cobra GT Coupe is a great example of how beautiful this design feature can be). You can also expect prettier taillights and a neatly sculpted diffuser panel.

Axial Flux Technology
Remember the third influential concept we talked about a moment ago? We were referring to the Vision One-Eleven Concept unveiled a little more than a year ago. Inspired by the C 111 experimental vehicles of the 1960s and 1970s, this 1,920-horsepower beauty features gullwing doors and a far-fetched cabin, but the really important stuff happens beneath the skin, where axial flux motors and an advanced battery pack combine to create a highly compact but immensely power-dense powertrain.

These motors are certain to make their way to production, and each one is small enough to fit inside a single wheel, which opens up plenty of possibilities for active torque vectoring and other performance-minded considerations. How exactly these will be implemented remains to be seen, but evidence of a rear-wheel steering system in these images suggests an agile driving experience is being targeted. The first all-electric true AMG product is coming in 2025, so the speculation will soon come to an end.
