Our never-ending search for cool cars (more or less) to write about recently took us to Mercedes-AMG’s official Instagram account, where one model caught our eye: the A 45 S.
Contrary to what some may think, the tuning fairy hasn’t visited this mega hatch, as it has the three-pointed star only to thank for its exquisite looks, including the stunning AMG Green Hell Magno exterior paint finish, whose name (and not only) was inspired by Germany’s infamous Nurburgring racetrack.
Some of you may remember the model from our previous coverage dating back to this year’s Valentine’s Day, and even if there’s nothing new to report on, we still think this ride deserves another chance to shine under the online spotlight. After all, it’s incredibly cool and has a lot of power on tap.
Besides the special paint finish, this Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4Matic+, which is part of a special edition, comes with fresh wheels that boast a matte black and yellow look. They measure 19 inches in diameter, have a seven double-spoke pattern, and are exclusive to this model. The alloys spin around the glossy black brake calipers that sport white AMG logos on them.
This mega hatch also gets additional special touches on the outside, including a bespoke fuel filler cap and a light projector, and can be fitted with several optional packages, like the AMG Night, AMG Night II, and AMG Aerodynamics. It also has a special touch inside, with yellow decorative stitching, Artico artificial leather, Microcut microfiber upholstery, 45 S embossing on the front headrests, special floor mats, and so on.
It is what lies under the hood that makes the Mercedes-AMG A 45 S truly special in the compact hot hatch segment. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine may not tell you anything at first. However, once you remember the amount of thrust produced, you will quickly realize why the AMG A 45 S 4Matic+ starts at €73,512.25 (equal to $79,392 at the current exchange rates – unavailable in our market) in Germany.
The four-banger produces 415 horsepower (421 ps/210 kW) and unlocks 369 pound-foot (500 Nm) of torque under heavy throttle abuse. The Affalterbach brand says the all-wheel drive mega hatch, which takes on the Audi RS 3 Sportback, tops out at 168 miles per hour (270 kph) and needs just 3.9 seconds from 0-62 mph (0 to 100 kph).
We don’t know about you, but we’ve always loved hot hatches, and since the Mercedes-AMG A 45 S sits at the top of the food chain, it’s impossible to ignore it. Moreover, this special edition looks great with its unique elements inside and out, and we’d be proud to own it. The question is, would you?
