Son Transforms His Dad’s Old Mercedes Into a New W222 Surprise
The customer’s father drove an old, beat-up pre-facelift version of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. He decided his father deserved more, so he took his car to a shop that transformed it into the facelifted version with what seems to be a Maybach-like interior.
The Mercedes sedan that drove into the shop is a pre-facelift W222 S 320, available in China in the mid-2010s. The model is powered by a 3.0-liter V6 engine, which produces 268 horsepower (272 metric horsepower) and 295 pound-feet (400 Newton meters) of torque.
A seven-speed 7G-Tronic automatic transmission puts the power down by spinning the rear wheels. Back in the day, the S 320 could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (0 to 97 kph) in 6.7 seconds on its way to a top speed of 155 mph (250 kph).
Before the transformation, the Benz came with all the issues that old cars develop over the years: paint chips, paint fading, curb rash, and outdated tech. The son was going to change this, so he took his dad’s sedan to a shop for a major makeover. The experts changed just about everything from bumper to bumper.
They removed every single component of the interior, from the window control panel, dashboard, and center console to the seats and headliner. The model also received new screens. The facelift version hit the market with an updated COMAND system with a larger display area, long before the MBUX made its way into the Mercedes models.
They also remove the wheels and dislocate the body panels, which are then repainted to remove every imperfection and bring some extra shine to the original dark blue paint that Mercedes-Benz calls Nautical Blue Metallic.
The car also gets new bumpers. One with a quad-exhaust layout shows up at the back, the kind you would only see at the V8-powered Mercedes-AMG S 63 or the range-topping S 65 with the 6.0-liter V12 M276 engine.
While the body is in the paint shop, the seats, dashboard, and door panels get reupholstered in brown perforated leather. Wool floor carpets replaced the factory ones. The Mercedes also receives new W222 facelift-style headlights, sporting the three-light-strip design and Multibeam LED technology, as well as new taillights.
The firm’s technicians also restored the V6 engine for upgraded performance. Everything screams elegance about the literally facelifted Mercedes-Benz S-Class. New multi-spoke, silver-finished wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport tires and gold-painted brake calipers replaced the old units with worn-out rubber.
There is no information about any extra oomph or the cost of the rebuild, but it looks like the son spared no expense to make his father happy. Once the car was completed, one thing was for sure: the owner, the man who had been driving this Mercedes for quite some time, wouldn’t recognize his own car.
