Mercedes-Benz S 580 4MATIC All-Black Fails To Sell

I think it’s safe to say that the W223 S-Class is a tiny bit more controversial than its predecessor due to its styling. Mercedes went with a totally different design language at a point when the W222 clearly stood as the quintessential German luxury sedan.
 

Granted, these designs change from generation to generation, but when Mercedes made the switch from the W222 to the W223, they didn’t just change the styling – but also the way in which we felt about the S-Class, to some extent. Still, the W223 remains a good-looking sedan, especially with the right spec and the correct-size wheels.
 
What we have here is a 2021 Mercedes S580 4MATIC model, which failed to sell at auction recently despite a top bid of $85,000. On the one hand, this car only has 18,000 miles on the clock, and you don’t have to look too close to spot all the Brabus bits (the wheels, body kit, exhaust outlets and interior accessories).
 
On the other hand, we’ve seen similar S580 4MATIC models go for $75,000 or even $70,000. The fact that this car didn’t sell tells me that most bidders didn’t really value the custom parts all that much. Then again, the seller may have set the reserve a bit too high – what do you guys think went wrong?
 

Anyway, let’s take a closer look at the spec, starting with that Obsidian Black exterior. It features the Brabus-sourced front spoiler and front and rear fascia inserts, to go with the carbon fiber decklid spoiler, quad black-chrome exhaust tips and badging.
 
Additional highlights include the LED headlights, soft-close doors, panoramic sunroof, and the Brabus Monoblock M 21” Platinum Edition wheels with Pirelli Sottozero Winter 270 Serie II tires. That’s some serious rubber for winter conditions – this car is a Minnesota resident. Of course, a set of Pirelli P Zero summer tires were also included in the sale.
 
Meanwhile, inside is where you’ll find the Macchiato Beige and Magma Grey Nappa leather upholstery, Silver Aluminum Fanned Walnut accents, Brabus floor mats, the power-adjustable, heated and ventilated seats, a Burmester surround-sound system, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, plus the Augmented Reality Head-Up Display, courtesy of the 3D Technology Package.
 

This luxury sedan also comes with a surround-view camera system, Active Parking Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Steering Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, the Airmatic air suspension and the optional Rear-Axle Steering system.
 
As for performance, the engine is a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 with a 48V mild-hybrid EQ Boost system. It sends 496 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels via a 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission and the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system.
 
If you’d rather buy a brand-new 2024 S580 4MATIC directly from Mercedes, it’s going to cost you $128,150 without any optional extras.
