Is anyone here a fan of the Dallas TV show – the prime-time soap opera that ran on CBS from 1978 to 1991? We’re asking because our memory of the series is decidedly intertwined with Patrick Duffy’s Bobby Ewing Mercedes-Benz 450 SL.
Many of the Dallas cars were Mercedes-Benz, like Sue Ellen’s ‘Ewing 2’ Mercedes-Benz 300 TD from season three and onwards or the Mercedes-Benz 380 SEC from season six and after – which was ultimately upgraded to Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC in season nine. J.R. (‘Ewing 3’), aka Larry Hagman, also drove a Mercedes-Benz, and Bobby upgraded his 450 SL to a newer 560 SL from season seven and more. But you get the point.
Well, if you want to feed the 1980s nostalgia or feel like one of those ritzy yet dramatic characters, the good folks over at Atlanta, Georgia-based Road Show International have a ‘subtle’ treat that may or may not cause fans to run amok crying for their ‘Benz life – a W126 Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC two-door coupe with RS Edition goodies. Of course, this example might be off the market as it could be the latest custom build for an artist or another affluent client, but it never fails to give them a DM and inquire about its state.
Anyway, what we have here is a stunning display of 1980s opulence – the Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC has an upper Alpine White and Off-White lower dual-tone shade, and it’s all mixed and matched with a Peanut Butter interior. The monster feeds and burbles on 93-octane gasoline to keep the thirsty 5.6-liter V8 alive, and the cockpit also has an AMG plaque to signal it’s not just another Mercedes-Benz. Total power is now 258 horsepower for a zero to 62 mph sprint in 5.7 seconds, while top speed is 155 mph or 250 kph, as per German tradition.
The RS Edition treats and tricks include deep-dish 18-inch Lorinser aftermarket wheels dressed in Off-White. The car also has a front-low and side aerodynamic kit plus a custom exhaust setup that gives it an additional 20 horsepower over stock. There’s also RS body-color gloss badging, a 25-mm lowered suspension setup via lowering links, a two-tone gloss tag frame, ceramic paint coating protection, and tinted windows and windshield.
If you think they don’t make them like they used to – you’re probably right. Nowadays, Mercedes-Benz isn’t selling a grand tourer like this 560 SEC anymore in America, and if you want something sporty with two doors, you’re stuck with the smaller and cheaper CLE Coupe and Cabriolet or the impractical two-seat Mercedes-AMG SL Roadster or GT coupe. So, what do you think? If you had the chance, would you go home in this Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC RS Edition or a modern machine like the ones we just mentioned?
