A 1984 Mercedes-Benz 540K? There must be something wrong, right? The iconic 540K Roadster rocked the streets in the late 1930s with an impressive stance and exclusive vibes. So, there can’t possibly be a 540K built in 1984. Unless… it’s a recreation model.
Designed by Friedrich Geiger, the man to “blame” for one of the most beautiful Mercedes examples ever made, the legendary 300 SL Gullwing, the 540K joined an exclusive lineup of collectibles. It checked all the right boxes: an iconic design, a high price, and low-volume production.
The production of the model stopped soon after World War II broke. Mercedes-Benz was planning to roll out a 580K with a larger displacement engine and redesigned body style but had to abort the plans.
The 540K was one of the largest and most expensive cars of its era. Only 419 such examples rolled off the production line of the Sindelfingen factory in Germany, and only 58 of them were roadsters. Not many have survived over the years.
The rarity makes them mind-blowingly expensive. They usually sell for an average price of $2.1 million. The most expensive ever sold was the 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540 K with only 872 miles on the clock, which found a new home in August 2022. A mystery customer paid an incredible $9.9 million to take it home.
But those figures are from a whole different league. What we have here is a faithful recreation of the original Mercedes-Benz 540K. The model saw the light of day in 1984, which makes it almost half a century younger than the real deal. However, the 41-year-old car shows little to no signs of wear.
Faithfully reproducing every inch, line, and curve of the original from bumper to bumper, the model was first registered in 1984 and has Belgian documentation.
The listing says it is painted silver over a burgundy interior, while the photos show red leather covering the seats and door cards. A wood veneer covers the dashboard. It rides on whitewall tires. The chassis and underbody are in good condition, with no reported problems in terms of looks or operation and driveability.
The sales ad fails to disclose important details, so there is no information about the engine that powers the 1984 Mercedes-Benz 540K recreation. The original was powered by a straight-eight 5.4-liter, which generated 115 horsepower (117 metric horsepower).
However, a Roots supercharger that could either be actuated manually for short periods of time or automatically when pushing the accelerator to the floor increased power to 180 horsepower (177 metric horsepower).
The engine was mated to either a four-speed or a five-speed manual (in later models), which sent power to the rear wheels. Vacuum-assisted hydraulic brakes provided the stopping power.
The 1984 Mercedes-Benz 540K with undisclosed underpinnings and powertrain goes under the hammer on March 25. We’ll keep an eye on it to see how far bidding goes.
