Mercedes GLC is going electric. The three-pointed star brand previewed the upcoming crossover a few weeks ago in pre-production form, and while it will utilize this nameplate, it won’t retire the ICE-powered variants, as it is the replacement of the EQC.
Christened the Mercedes-Benz GLC with EQ Technology, it is based on the MB.EA construction. The new platform doesn’t have anything to do with the CLA, as it will be the electric C-Class that will make use of the same gear. It is an 800-volt architecture that supports fast charging rates over 320 kW, which is very impressive, as plugging it in for a few minutes will unlock a generous range.
In its most frugal configurations, the upcoming Mercedes-Benz GLC with EQ Technology should target over 400 miles (644 km) on a full charge. The electric crossover is expected to sip electrons from 10 to 80 percent in less than 18 minutes. It will feature a compact module mixing the master cylinder, brake booster, and electronic stability control, and this feature will extend its range while also optimizing the brake energy recuperation.
We have no idea what types of motors power it, as the automaker has been tight-lipped about it. However, we can assume that it will pack a rear drive unit developed in-house, whereas the upper specs add a second motor at the front for all-wheel drive capability. Details surrounding the output, thrust, straight-line sprint, and top speed will be released in due course, and it is worth noting that Mercedes-AMG is also working on a hot derivative.
Want to talk about the design? Well, prototypes of the upcoming Mercedes GLC with EQ Technology have already smiled for the camera and the company itself released a few official spy shots. Based on those pre-production testers, the rendering crowd has come up with a few realistic digital illustrations of the future model, and by rendering crowd, we mean the peeps at Kolesa in this case, as this story is all about those CGIs.
It’s not the prettiest premium compact electric crossover we have seen, but at least it is instantly recognizable as a modern Mercedes. The imagined model has a light strip between the star-studded headlights, a generous grille, a familiar lighting signature at the rear, fake exhaust tips, and flush-mounted door handles, and was envisioned in two body styles: traditional SUV (crossover) and coupe, with the latter featuring a more sloping roofline for less cargo space and not that much headroom compared to the former.
Chances are the real thing will look pretty much like the one in these renderings, as the quoted outlet is known for keeping things real when it comes to renderings. So, what’s your take on the styling?
