Mercedes folks in the UK thought the C63 AMG needed more pep, so the DR520 model added 70 more ponies.
If you haven’t heard of the C63 AMG DR520, you’re not alone. Only twenty of these cars exist, and they were only built for the UK market. So you’d be excused for being a bit unfamiliar with this performance special.
According to PistonHeads, this particular wagon here is one of just five DR520 wagons built. The name of the car is derived from “Dyno Rated” 520 horsepower. Impressive when the standard C63 had to make due with a scrawny 451. While you may not have heard of it, it does come from the UK wing of Mercedes’ Specialist Products Division. So it is extremely rare even in the world of AMG.
Before being modified into the DR520, the basis of each car was a Performance Package P30 equipped C63 AMG. All the hardware necessary to get more horsepower and performance out of the car was already there. Via MotorTrend, we know that the extra hardware includes the forged piston, crankshaft and connecting rods from the venerable SLS.
Also included in the P30 was the upgraded brake package to help slow down those extra horsepower digits. And the 520 sprinkled some trinkets on top for good measure. Embroidery on the headrests, floor mats reminded you while you were inside, surrounded by Alcantara. And special edition badges flanked either side and the rear. Oh, and you could get it in just two colors; matte white, or matte slate. Both were a film wrap.
So why get a DR520 instead of a 507 Edition? Good question. The Dr520 pre-dated the 507 by about two years. So this was the only way to get more bite to match the bark of the M156. At least in an official capacity. Then of course came the Black Series which took all of that power and cranked it to – and then past – 11.
With so few to gather info on, it’s hard to say where they sit in the market these days. A cheap C63 can set you back for very low amounts of money. And the price on this one seems to assume the DR520 has appreciated in value. It’s tough to gauge an asking price versus a sale price, but would you pay £74,950 (Close enough to $100,000) for this car? Or would you just get a 507 and call it a day?
