Mercedes-Benz has just expanded its C-Class family in the Land Down Under. The automaker has introduced the C 350 e, a plug-in hybrid version of its premium compact sedan.
The new model is on sale as we speak. It brings the usual equipment that we will highlight in just a few moments. However, first, we have to delve into its powertrain by telling you that it mixes a 2.0-liter four-banger with an electric motor.
According to the three-pointed star brand, the new Mercedes-Benz C 350 e has a combined output of 230 kW (312 ps/308 hp) and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque. The internal combustion lump produces up to 150 kW (204 ps/201 hp) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft), and the electric motor generates up to 95 kW (129 ps/127 hp) and 440 Nm (325 lb-ft) of torque. The output and thrust go to the rear wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission.
The plug-in hybrid variant of the latest generation Mercedes-Benz C-Class features a 25.4 kWh battery pack. The automaker says that it offers an all-electric range of up to 104 km (65 miles), albeit on the very optimistic NEDC cycle. The battery can be rejoiced by the internal combustion lump or by plugging it in. Mercedes claims the 0 to 100 kph (0 to 62 mph) acceleration is dealt with in a very respectable 6.1 seconds.
This car has a route-based operating strategy that optimizes the energy consumption. It activates the all-quiet driving mode where necessary, such as in the city. Mercedes states that the car’s system combines parameters from the navigation, topography, speed limits, and traffic conditions to manage the charging and discharging of the battery when the driver programs a destination in the navigation system. This feature ensures more efficient energy use.
‘One-pedal driving’ is available in the normal ‘D’ mode, and those behind the wheel can influence the energy recovery rate by operating the rocker switches behind the steering wheel in three stages. This can be done in all driving modes except Sport.
Some of the on-board equipment includes the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a matching infotainment screen, voice control, gesture control, navigation system with augmented reality, Burmester 3D surround sound, Adaptive High Beam Assist Plus, Driving Assistance Package Plus, Comfort Suspension with self-leveling at the rear, and others. It also gets heated and memory front seats, a head-up display, a panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree camera system, 18-inch AMG alloys, LED lights, etc.
Located under the rear bench, the battery takes roughly two hours to be fully charged from zero percent at 11 kW and a 0-80% recharge takes around 20 minutes at 55 kW. Mercedes offers the C 350 e plug-in hybrid from AU$98,200 (equal to US$63,550) in Australia.
