The second collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and Moncler sees a new addition to the ‘puffer vehicle collection,’ and this time around, you can even buy something from them.
Bearing the signature of Gorden Wagener, the automaker’s chief of design, a ‘mysterious’ project was announced last year for the 2023 London Fashion Week. As it turned out, it was a Mercedes-Benz G-Class turning into the puffer of off-road dreams at Moncler’s behest, because of fashion, of course. This was like the ‘Puff Daddy’ of vehicles, aka the Mercedes Project Mondo G, which clearly referenced Moncler’s puffer jackets from a mile away thanks to its puffer wheels and top.
Now, more than a year later, luckily, we’re not getting it ready for series production. Instead, Mercedes-Benz and Moncler decided to expand their collaboration at “The City of Genius” show in Shanghai with an entire roster of activities – a marketing campaign, a capsule fashion collection, a limited-edition G-Class, and also a brand-new ‘art piece.’ The latter is called Mercedes-Benz Project G-Class Past II Future, and this time around, it involves a third member of the team – it was also inspired by fashion designer, music producer, and creative director NIGO.
Present at the City of Genius show in Shanghai on October 19, 2024, Mercedes-Benz and Moncler launched the new brand campaign coined “Past Forward. Where the Future is Driven by the Past.” Attached to it is the short-wheelbase Mercedes-Benz G-Class Cabriolet, an art car nicknamed Project G-Class Past II Future and inspired by NIGO. The SUV started life as a G from the 1990s that was first completely restored.
After that, NIGO reworked some of the design elements inside and out to revive the design and bring it into the present cultural landscape. But that wasn’t all; Moncler’s puffer style appears once again alongside touches like a matte two-tone mix of olive green and grey, black and gold exterior accents, plus an audio installation by Devon Turnbull – with the “boom boxes” placed on the convertible top’s linkage and also removable like the entire roof. There’s also a checkered seat upholstery pattern, plus orange and gold touches.
“For me, the 90s were among the most influential decades from a cultural and creative standpoint. Electronic music and the hip-hop scene arose as a new expression of urban character. I wanted to integrate that vibe and energy into the design of the Project G-Class Past II Future by interpreting that legacy for a new contemporary era,” said NIGO. Additionally, there’s a gender-neutral fashion collection that will become available as a capsule collection starting spring next year (April).
Alas, that’s not all – Mercedes-Benz collectors will be offered a limited-edition Mercedes-Benz G-Class Past II Future based on the G 450 d and G 500. It has a green and grey two-tone exterior, checkered upholstery inside, a rear-mounted spare wheel with logo cover, black exterior touches, light alloy wheels, and Past II Future lettering on the bumper guard and interior grab handle. You’d better hurry, though, as only 20 examples will be available for sale.
