In a weird twist, some European regulations might mean AMG switches out the 4-cyl AMG C63 for a turbo 6 cylinder.

You have to hand it to AMG lately. They can take direct input from their customers and gaslight them into believing they are stupid. While AMG is still making some very good cars, the W206 C63 AMG has definitively missed the mark in a big way. While undeniably fast, it lacks the overall essence of what makes the C63 AMG good.
They got it right for 4 generations, AMG did. V8’s were a calling card to big-engine-small-car fun. And sure, the newest one is faster. But a 4 cylinder turbo hybrid just doesn’t quite hit the same. So AMG listened… kinda. AutoBlog has a report that AMG will indeed be replacing the 4-cylinder turbo hybrid setup. In fact they are sunsetting the car earlier than expected. But before you give credit to AMG, keep reading.
Interestingly, the C63 isn’t the only AMG ready to go. All M139 powered cars are being axed, too, including C43, GLC 63 and GLC 43. The thing is, that setup isn’t bad, but it has to go. Strict European regulations are looming for 2026, and to meet those regulations, AMG would have to make some significant changes. Not on emissions, but on sounds.
This leads to an interesting proposition for AMG. The M139 performs best as a high revving power house, and that doesn’t suit sound emissions too well. An inline 6 would be larger displacement, but better for sound emissions. So the world might be healing. More cylinders in a C63 is lovely, even if it is not for the reasons you or I would prefer.
Either way, it isn’t fully electric just yet so there’s some home for the combustion minded among us. The 900 horsepower all electric GLC would give us a window to the future on what silent AMGs may feel like. Even if we don’t really want to know. The 6-cylinder AMG ONE is maybe more in line with the immediate future. Minus the Formula 1 exotica. But it makes you wonder what an AMG engine builder’s plate would look like in an electric motor.
