Mercedes likes the idea of producing an all-electric cabriolet but admits making such a car won’t be easy.

During a recent interview with Top Gear, Mercedes chief operating officer Markus Schäfer expressed his interest in an electric cabriolet model but did not provide any indication as to what form it could take nor when it could arrive.

“It’s not that easy to build a good-looking electric cabriolet,” Schäfer started off by saying. “And we have to recognize that the demand for roadsters and cabriolets is declining. China is not a cabriolet market and there are less buyers in Europe compared to some years ago. But I think it’s a very attractive product and an emotional product that builds the brand.”

“We have to put our thinking caps on and engineer an EV in the form of a roadster,” he added. “When you think about AMG and turning AMG into an electric brand, we will definitely think about a cabriolet as well.”

A convertible Mercedes-AMG EV could take many forms. For example, it could be positioned as a rival to the forthcoming Tesla Roadster or it could be a luxurious GT more akin to the S-Class Cabriolet. It could even be a small sports car similar in size to the SLC. Whatever the case may be, it is bound to be fast.

Mercedes has presented one particularly fascinating electric cabriolet in recent years, namely the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet. It featured no less than 750 hp and was conceived with over 311 miles (500 km) of range when unveiled back in 2017.
