Another development Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class test mule – a sportier AMG version equipped with a wild-looking spoiler at the rear – has been spotted undergoing winter testing. It follows another sighting a few days ago, when CarBuzz spy photographers spotted two Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class sedans, confirming that the production version of the Concept CLA Class will come with gasoline and battery-powered variants.

Whether the spotted prototype is the gasoline-fed version or the EQA EV is unclear, but we’re positive that AMG is cooking something for the hotter CLAs.

Mercedes-Benz has done a great job of concealing the test mule, albeit the circular lighting elements (front and back) from the concept were unable to hide from the prying eyes of our photographers.

While the concealments suggest a ducktail execution for the rear aero, we can expect a much better-looking version underneath that thick camo wrap, probably active ones. Other sporty elements found on the test mule include the larger black wheels, which differ from the silver ones our spies caught before. The brakes appear to be larger, too, plus the fenders seem to be wider than what we saw before.

Meanwhile, a closer look at the front bumper shows us a more aggressive styling for the sporty CLA. The holes for ventilation extend to the edge of the bumper, suggesting that the AMG versions will have a larger lower intake for better cooling. Due to the snowy weather, we couldn’t see if the exhaust was sticking out from the rear.

The next CLA Class and the EQA will use the new Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA) platform, which promises a WLTP-rated range of up to 466 miles and 5.2 miles per kWh energy consumption. It also has an 800-volt EV architecture for fast charging up to 249 miles in 15 minutes.

Apart from the Concept CLA Class production version, three new models will be born on the same platform, particularly the electric replacements of GLA-Class, GLB-Class, and the not-for-US-market CLA Shooting Brake.

Expect Mercedes-Benz to reveal the CLA Class and its electric derivatives this year. Whether the sportier AMG versions will debut at launch is still uncertain, but we’ll know more as the months progress.
