Mercedes G-Wagen Like Carlex Design’s New Habemus

Habemus Carlex! We refine vehicles leaving the rest to others.

Carlex Design has been on a roll recently by presenting all kinds of retro-ish takes on the modern Mercedes G-Wagen, dressed in different attire. However, the latest is also their most exciting yet and, dare we say, probably the coolest take on this iconic off-roader that we have seen so far.

The Polish tuner calls it the Habemus, which is likely Latin for ‘to have, hold, possess, consider, think,’ and it’s pure opulence on wheels – six wheels! Yes, you read that right, as this G-Wagen is a six-wheel-drive machine. The images released on social media appear to be renderings, albeit official ones, and knowing how Carlex rolls, it’s probably a matter of time until this project becomes real.

The thing that truly makes it stand out is the extremely modified body. Instead of four doors, this G-Wagen features a two-door design, with an open cockpit in what would’ve normally been the bed. The car has been envisioned as a Popemobile. It has a large seat in the middle, right behind the front ones, and a pair of inward-facing jump seats behind. The whole cockpit boasts a white look with red carpeting that features designer-like edging and a familiar dashboard panel.

Besides the six-wheel-drive capability, this Mercedes G-Wagen has fender flares, some gold trim contrasting the white body, gold accents on the retro-inspired wheels, golden front and rear bumpers, golden side skirts, a modified back end with a couple of steps to facilitate ingress and egress, a custom grille that was designed by Carlex Design, and the tuner’s logos at the front and rear. A pair of small flag holders are also on deck, as well as a 3D three-pointed star emblem on the hood.

Unfortunately, Carlex Design hasn’t offered any details about this build, so we do not know if it is a regular Mercedes-Benz G-Class or the hotter Mercedes-AMG G 63. Given that it lacks the side-mounted exhaust tips, we lean on the former rather than the latter. However, the entire exhaust system was likely modified, so we could be wrong on that. After all, such a build deserves the Affalterbach brand’s 4.0L bi-turbo V8, which is good for 577 hp (585 ps/430 kW) on the standard G 63, enabling 0-62 mph (0-100 kph) in 4.5 seconds.

Due to the Pope association, we doubt that this extremely special Mercedes G-Wagen will be available to private collectors, assuming Carlex Design gives it a shot at turning it into reality. Moreover, the tuner is mostly known for its exquisite interiors, cool paint finishes, and hot wheels. Thus, another company might be involved in the development. That is assuming it is indeed in the making and not a marketing prop. Either way, nice job, Carlex, as usual, and keep up the great work!
