We’ve known for a long while that Mercedes is preparing a smaller version of the G-Class and we have seen it several times in pre-production guise, courtesy of our spy photographers who have snapped a few camouflaged prototypes while doing their thing in the open.

Our latest encounter with this model dates back to a few days ago, which is when a tester was scooped in Europe’s frozen north, coping with cold like a champ and truly looking like a shrunken G-Wagen. Now, those spy pics were used by the peeps at Kolesa, more specifically, by their pixel master Nikita Chuyko, to create a new set of very realistic renderings, so what you see here is likely what you will get, for the most part, when the vehicle finally debuts.
As previously reported, the so-called Mini G or Baby G, which is clearly not its official name (name unknown), really looks like a tinier version of the G-Class. That’s great news for the company’s fanbase, as this model should sell pretty much like hotcakes. And unlike the GLB, which was initially believed to be the actual Baby G due to its tricky camouflage and faux cladding, this one really looks like a chip off the old block, as everything screams G-Class on the outside, albeit on smaller proportions.
It features a very boxy exterior design, a clean profile, fender flares, a familiar-looking hood, round headlights flanking the usual grille, three air intakes in the front bumper, regular door mirrors, and a flat roof. The taillights also look like they’ve been sourced from the Mercedes G-Class, and the same goes for the bumper and rear door, too. The latter has a holder for the charging cables attached to it, just like the electric version of the G-Wagen, which is known as the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology.

Initial data reveals that the Mercedes Baby G will launch with battery-electric firepower, and it might borrow in this chapter from other EVs within the brand’s portfolio. Nothing is confirmed when it comes to a potential ICE version, though some rumors claim that the shrunken variant of the G-Wagen could indeed go down this route. Nevertheless, chances are the powertrain family will vary from one market to another, and it seems that the automaker is keeping most options on the table for now.
The Mercedes Mini G will pretty much enter a niche of premium-oriented, off-road-ready vehicles, and one of its biggest rivals within this niche will be the Land Rover Baby Defender (name also unofficial). It will feature a ladder frame chassis, and will have a serious attitude. And we truly hope that it also gets at least one ICE powertrain for customers who are not ready to make the EV jump just yet. Do you like the design as imagined by the quoted outlet?
