The Poland-based tuner started small and has grown too big for planet Earth – so they’re taking to the skies (again) with their latest collaboration. Meet the Carlex x ScaleWings G-51 pair.
The aftermarket realm probably never was as vast and wonderful as it is today. If you want a full-size heavy-duty pickup truck reaching for the sky on many inches of lift kits, if you want a sports car looking like a mad drift machine with a slammed widebody attitude, if you want an ultra-luxury super-SUV with bespoke carbon fiber elements, or if you want something as simple as a pair of resh wheels, anything is available.
There’s also the section of restomods – cars that are older than your parents but are now riddled with modern technology and the same cool looks. There’s even a niche that we can easily call ‘reverse restomods’ nowadays. Seriously! Just look at what Carlex Design is doing with the Mercedes-AMG G 63 off-road luxury SUV – they’re taking the latest generation and turning it into something that feels like it was brought from the 1970s with the G-Vintage program.
The sky is the limit in the tuning realm, indeed, and Carlex Design – which started as an interior customizer but grew into the expansive trend of making special commissions – is proving that once again. Remember when we took a trip to see their first complete in-house project, the Carlex G-Falcon, a bespoke Mercedes-AMG G 63 that was inspired by the winged creatures?
Well, that’s not all. Instead, the great folks over at Carlex Design have done it again, dialing the Mercedes-AMG G 63 above eleven – towards the sky. Inspired by the fact that they continue to consider the Mercedes G-Class as a model that “despite nearly five decades of existence, remains an unwavering benchmark of style and class, (…) with a unique personality making it impossible to overlook on the road.” As such, their latest collaborative effort is again based on the latest Mercedes-AMG G 63, an off-road luxury SUV equipped with a 4.0-liter turbo V8 and a mild hybrid setup (577 hp + 20 hp and 850 Nm/627 lb-ft).
It usually sprints to 62 mph in just 4.4 seconds on its way to a maximum speed of 149 mph or 240 kph, but this time around, everyone wants it standing still for as long as possible. That’s because the new project – titled Carlex x ScaleWings G-51 is truly a (dual) masterpiece that needs to be admired for as much time as possible before setting off and taking off into the sunset. So, you guessed correctly, this time around, Carlex Design allied with a plane maker. It’s not just any aviation company, though.
Instead, ScaleWings is “celebrated for its masterful artistry in breathing new life into the iconic P-51 Mustang.” They craft “carbon fiber tributes that echo the soul of the original, with breathtaking precision down to the finest detail.” Now, there’s a car and plane package – complete with matching interior and exterior colors plus countless bespoke details. But why did they choose this direction?
According to Carlex, among the countless ideas, “amidst the chaos of vivid colors and flamboyant body kits, our ambition was to create something different – a G-Class with a soul that pays homage to timeless elegance.” So, they took the Carlex G-Vintage one step further and mated with one of the icons of the aviation world – the P-51 Mustang! So, the new Flying Legends Collection has its first representative, the Carlex x ScaleWings G-51 duo, with the first representative being the Emerald Racer – “cloaked in deep Racing Green, glinting with polished aluminum, and kissed by black and white racing stripes.”
Soon, the Shadow Comet and Crimson Phantom will follow, but before that, let’s admire the Emerald Racer, of which only three pairs will see the light of day. Clad in vintage brown leather inside – both the airplane and the G 63 also share the color styling along with many other details, like the hand-polished and riveted aluminum roof cover or the P-51-inspired interior air vents for the Mercedes-AMG G 63. Not only is the green the same, but the aluminum color is also matched between the SUV and the former Warbird; the stripes match, and the side exhausts have the same number of outlets (six) on each side!
Obviously, these two are a sight to behold, and it’s impossible not to be in awe at the craftsmanship exhibited by these machines. Frankly, after we first got our jaws off the floor seeing these two machines side-by-side in the photo shoot, the first thought that crossed our minds was simple – it’s best they didn’t complete the ‘cars, boats, planes’ trifecta with a matching naval craft otherwise some of us might have fainted at their sight! Jokes aside, don’t even bother to ask us how much these pairs cost – they’re available exclusively as a duo in a very limited collection, so they’re probably asking seven figures for them!
