Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe Concept Feels Ready To Rock

The latest news about Mercedes-Benz Cars is quite overwhelming: the iconic, all-terrain Unimog is turning 80, and Gorden Wagener is ending his design tenure with the company after shaping its styling for almost three decades.

The most luxurious Unimog truck has been developed under his supervision, just like the stunning Mercedes-Benz Vision Iconic and the controversial GLC with EQ Technology. The Mercedes-Benz design boss, Gorden Wagener, is leaving the company after 28 years, and AMG’s chief stylist will take over starting in 2026.

However, that might not spell good news, as many people don’t necessarily like the Concept AMG GT XX, a preview of the upcoming successor to the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe. After all, the man who’s leaving the company was responsible for bonkers things like the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, the all-new Mercedes-AMG SL, or the modern G-Class.

Of course, he also had his fair share of duds, such as the entire lineup of Mercedes-EQ vehicles. So, just in case the new AMG design boss fails to do their job, the parallel universes of vehicular CGI are already prepared to offer a solution – the members of the imaginative guild of digital car content creators.

More precisely, this independent design project by a virtual artist named Frédéric Le Sciellour (aka frederic.lesciellour on social media) could easily serve as their resume. The title reads ‘Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe concept car,’ but we’re also reading between the lines, as the second generation is too new to have a successor, having been introduced in production in 2023 for the 2024 model year.

It’s not even ripe for a mid-cycle refresh procedure, so perhaps this new Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe model would be better off as a new entry-level vehicle sitting below the second-generation AMG GT and the SL convertible. It features more muscular lines, instead of the traditional long-hooded, cabin-recessed GT from the real world, and it could easily adopt the latter’s entry-level 2.0-liter mild hybrid turbocharged powertrain, along with just two seats, rather than the 2+2 arrangement.

As such, Mercedes-AMG could reserve the V8 for the proper GT and alleviate any concerns of diluting the model’s panache. The little GT could also gain an inline-six assembly, potentially the M256 setup with the 3.0-liter hooked to a PHEV setup with 604 hp or a detuned setup of around 500 hp. As for the design, it’s obviously an interpretation of the current AMG style at the front, but the profile and the rear are infused with their own lifestyle – and it’s not bad at all.

So, what do you think? Should Mercedes-AMG introduce a lower-tier GT coupe model to its roster to potentially compete with models like the Nissan Z and the next-generation Toyota GR Supra, as well as the rumored rebirth of the Mazda RX-7?
