2026 Mercedes-Maybach GLS Spied With Updates

Mercedes-Benz is preparing a facelift for the GLS-Class, the second for the current generation of the full-size SUV.
 

The current GLS-Class arrived for the 2020 model year and was given a mild update for 2024. This second update, which is anticipated for the 2027 model year, will be more substantial, judging by the camouflage gear on the latest prototypes.
 
The prototypes are for an updated version of the Maybach-enhanced GLS-Class. Camouflaged prototypes for the regular GLS-Class and high-performance AMG GLS 63 are also out testing.
 

Mercedes’ plans for the mechanical components remain uncertain. The Maybach GLS-Class is currently offered in the U.S. exclusively in GLS 600 guise. This model is powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 and 48-volt mild-hybrid combination, with its peak output registering at 550 hp. A 9-speed automatic and all-wheel-drive system complete the drivetrain.
 
Mercedes typically updates its vehicles only once during a product cycle, but this second refresh aims to extend the current-generation GLS-Class’ shelf life. The decision aligns with Mercedes’ strategy to keep certain gas-powered models on the market longer than initially anticipated.
 

The shift comes in response to slower-than-expected demand for electric vehicles. While Mercedes had originally planned to transition fully to electric power by 2030, the automaker announced last year that it will continue offering gas-powered models beyond that timeframe.
 
The GLE-Class midsize SUV is also due for a second update. Prototypes for the updated GLE-Class are also out testing, with the market launch likely to coincide with the launch of the updated GLS-Class.
