The old Mercedes G-Wagen (Gelandewagen) lived for many decades before the three-pointed star brand finally introduced the second generation in 2018. This model was given a mid-cycle refresh last year, and by the looks of it, it is here to stay.

We wouldn’t be surprised to learn that Mercedes plans to milk the current (Benz) G-Class / (AMG) G 63 for as long as possible. After all, that’s what it did with its predecessor. However, new-age vehicles must keep up with new technology if they want to remain competitive, so we believe that the next generation is probably on the table.

Chances are the design is far from being finalized, and if anything, Mercedes would want to retain the current car’s overall styling. After all, it has successfully managed to preserve it for a few decades. Thus, the same boxy overall look should be present, alongside modified front and rear fascias that shouldn’t be that different from the current car, yet new enough to draw a clear line between the second and third-generation models.

The interior, however, is where most of the changes should take place. Who knows what the future holds for the next-gen Mercedes-Benz G-Class and the Mercedes-AMG G 63, assuming the latter will retain this moniker, yet one thing is certain: new screens and fresh tech will be part of the significant makeover, alongside more advanced driving systems. The ladder-frame chassis would still be a thing for the next G-Wagen, in a perfect world, alongside internal combustion lumps and at least one V8 engine.

This is our inner G-Wagen enthusiast talking about the next generation, and we don’t think that Mercedes will kill this nameplate anytime soon, as the car is basically a fashion statement in today’s world. In fact, it is so popular that you can find it in the possession of some famous people, often with a tuning twist and sometimes with even more power than it initially received at the Magna Steyr factory in Graz, Austria, where it comes to life.

Speaking of power, we should remind you that the Mercedes-AMG G 63 still tops the 2025 family. It boasts 577 horsepower and 627 pound-feet (850 Nm) of torque from its bi-turbo V8 with a 4.0L displacement, taking 4.2s from 0-60 mph (97 kph) and tapping out at 137 mph (220 kph), which can be increased to 149 mph (240 kph) with the optional AMG Performance Pack. Pricing kicks off at $186,100 in our market.

Sitting at the low end of the spectrum is the 2025 Mercedes-Benz G 550, which is known as the G 500 overseas. It comes with an MSRP of $148,250 attached to it and does 0-60 mph in 5.3 seconds. The latest iteration no longer packs a V8, but a 3.0L turbocharged inline-six unit with an integrated starter generator. The model has 443 hp and 413 pound-feet (560 Nm) of torque to play with.

For the first time ever, the iconic G-Wagen has also received an electric derivative. It’s called the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology and starts at $161,500 in our market. Aided by its four electric motors, the zero-emission version of the model offers 580 hp and 859 pound-feet (1,164 Nm) of torque. The three-pointed star brand says it reaches 60 mph in 4.6 seconds, or just four-tenths of a second slower than the AMG G 63.

Now that we have reminded ourselves about the modern lineup, it’s time to get back to speaking about the next generation, and it is due to a very good reason: a set of renderings that recently popped up on social media. They were shared by @lsdesignsrl, who calls it Brutus, and it looks like a G-Wagen from the future.

The car in question still has a boxy overall appearance and can be easily recognized as a G-Class. However, the front fascia is no longer home to the round headlights, as these were replaced with new units. The corporate logo still decorates the grille, which has two horizontal slats in this case. The profile is different yet not that bad at all, and out back, it sports vertical taillights on each side of the rear door that still has the spare wheel holder attached to it.

This probably wouldn’t be our first choice out of a set of digital illustrations supposedly depicting the next-generation Mercedes-Benz G-Class. However, they wouldn’t be our last either, as we think there is great potential in them, and with a few rearranged pixels, it could actually turn out to be a very good-looking successor to the iconic premium off-roader.

What do you think the future holds for this model? Will the next-gen be ICE or EV or perhaps both? When will it come out? Feel free to speak your mind about the car in the comments box below and tell us what you think of this rendered model.
