Mercedes EQS SUV Mildly Refreshed In Different Attire

Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV will not have a direct successor, at least not one named EQS. However, before ending its career, the German carmaker will offer the three-row SUV a last hurrah with a mild redesign. Although this will not change its sad fate, it will give it a fresher face in its last model years.

Mercedes-Benz didn’t quite nail the EV revolution, with its EQ branding not very popular with customers. Many blame this failure on the bland design, which alienated the brand’s traditional customers without gaining new fans.

The German carmaker tried to correct this mistake on the recently facelifted EQS sedan with a new grille inspired by the gas-powered S-Class, but that was not enough. Finally, Mercedes had to admit defeat and stop US production of EQE, EQS, and their SUV variants, although production will continue in Europe for a while.

Before the EQS SUV is retired, it will receive a last makeover, as revealed by recent encounters. Last month, our photographers snapped a prototype of the facelifted EQS SUV for the first time, showing off the new three-pointed stars DRL integrated into the headlights. We’ve now caught a white prototype, which offers a better view of the design changes Mercedes-Benz prepared.

The detail that caught our eye was the taillights, which looked almost unchanged from the current model. There are subtle changes in the light signature, but no stars like the ones we’ve seen on the CLA. Alas, the ones in the front, two per headlight no less, should suffice. This is the second time we have seen an EQS SUV like that, and we assume these are production lights. The camouflage tape covers the rear spoiler and much of the front section, leaving everything to the imagination.

Mercedes-Benz fans might expect bigger changes under the hood, especially as the carmaker launched the CLA with vastly superior tech. However, given that the EQS SUV is fading into the sunset, the German carmaker is unlikely to make much effort in the technical department. There may be some optimizations here and there, but no significant architecture changes are to be expected.

Switching to the rumored EVA2M and its 800-volt electrical architecture would take a major overhaul, which would be a waste on the EQS SUV. The eATS 2.0 drive units that debuted on the CLA are also unlikely, although not impossible. We expect these advancements to debut only on the next-generation S-Class EV, which is expected closer to the end of the decade.

What we expect is a more thorough refresh of the infotainment system, with the MB.OS borrowed from the recently launched CLA. The upgraded brains should ease the transition to software-defined vehicles and provide better support for advanced driver assistance systems.

The MB.OS will govern most of the car’s functions, including infotainment, automated driving, body and comfort, driving, and charging. It will also integrate Chat-GPT alongside Google and Microsoft AI assistants. The entire setup is connected to the Mercedes Benz Intelligent Cloud, allowing it to be continuously updated over the air.
