Mercedes EQS SUV Bigger Changes Are Hiding Underneath

We’ve already spotted prototypes of a facelift for the Mercedes-Benz EQS electric sedan out and about, including one being towed sadly behind a G-Class over the winter. That makes it less of a surprise that the EQS SUV is also due for a makeover.

Now the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV facelift has been spotted for the first time. The camouflaged version of the SUV shows quite clearly what hasn’t been changed while hiding what has. Benz will no-doubt hope that this redesign will have you seeing stars, but just like the model’s sales, there won’t be as many as anyone wanted.

The EQS Gets A Facelift, But It’s A Small One
We use the term facelift to describe any new model makeover that leaves hard details like the roofline alone, but this one really is just a facelift. Mercedes is re-working the nose, giving the EQS SUV the star-shaped LED accent lights that it first showed a couple of years back on the CLA concept and are now popping up on virtually everything the company makes.

Because this is one of Benz’s more expensive models, the EQS SUV will get two sets of stars up front. We’ve seen other models lower down the roster get just one per front lamp. Our spies tell us that the front spoiler will also be new, and that the front grille will pick up a large vertically integrated star logo. Yes, the EQS SUV already has one of those, but this one will be different. The tiny bit of camo tape on the leading edge of the hood hints at a change to the running light strip there, along with a change to the Benz hood badge.

We said that it’s just a facelift, but it looks like the EQS SUV will get a new back bumper. It can’t be that new, though, as it comes with the same rear hatch as before. The current EQS SUV comes with a pair of fake tailpipes, which is a detail that’s more than a little silly, and it looks like Mercedes will mercifully be deleting them.

Bigger Changes Are Hiding Underneath
Beauty (or however you want to describe the styling of the EQS SUV) is only skin-deep. The CarBuzz spies tell us that this refreshed EQS will come with some important changes you can’t see in the photos.

The changes include an upgrade to the electrical platform of the vehicle. We expect it to pick up Benz’s latest eATS 2.0 in-house electric motors. They will use more efficient silicon carbide inverters and have other tech that should boost power and range, though not as much as the upcoming YASA Axial Flux motors. We’re also expecting battery updates.

We expect the refreshed Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV to be revealed at the IAA show in Munich this September and go on sale in early 2026. Some Mercedes-Benz dealers in the US will likely be salivating for the arrival of a better EQS. Benz has just slashed the MSRP of the EV, which should boost demand. But the company is also pressing pause on production of the model in September. So while the electric SUV will be more affordable, it will also be very tough to find.
