New Mercedes “Baby” Class Revealed – A Legend in a New, More Compact Form
After years of rumors, reports, and official confirmations, the Mercedes G-Wagen is finally having a baby. The model is unofficially known as the ‘Mini G,’ though that won’t be its name when the big day comes, as the company will call it something else.
The overall design has only recently been made public, albeit in a shadowy teaser presented during the new Mercedes GLC’s unveiling at the ongoing Munich Motor Show. And if you must know, it won’t look anything like the one rendered above (and below). Still, to give the digital creator of this high-rider credit, the CGI video is a few days old, whereas the three-pointed star brand only recently teased the Mini G.
This is pretty much a shrunken version of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class (and AMG G 63), just like the real Mini G, though with the obvious design differences at the front, sides, and rear. We can only tell you about the latter for now, as it was the only one visible in the teaser. And to some surprise, it looks like a tiny G-Wagen, with similar taillights, bumper, tailgate (or rear door), and spare wheel holder that could turn out to be storage space for the charging cables, like on the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology.
Yes, this means the Mercedes Mini G will be an electric vehicle. This is what the big outlets report, anyway, and most of them seem to agree that there won’t be any ICE-powered version, which is a pity, as not everyone is willing to go full EV, and the all-quiet version of the G-Class is not exactly a best seller. But who knows, maybe the Mini G will be one, given that it will clearly cost less money to purchase.
If you know your G-Wagens, you are aware that all of them boast ladder-frame constructions. This will also apply to the Mini G, yet instead of utilizing a shrunken version of its larger sibling’s platform, it will be based on a different one. This means that it will be a real off-roader, limited only by the autonomy and the usual mods that would allow it to venture farther off the lit path than any other Mercedes, save for the G-Class.
The first test mules are expected to start doing their thing in the open soon, and from there, the model will transition to its final production attire, albeit wrapped in camouflage. The official unveiling date is not yet known, though we think it should be a couple of years away, or perhaps slightly more, depending on the challenges the development team encounters. The smaller sibling to the G-Wagen will be a rival to the Land Rover Defender 80 / Defender Sport (Baby Defender).
