Mercedes G-Class EV Decides To Sell After Just 1,200 Miles

This Mercedes G580 EQ Edition One model is powered by four electric motors that combine for 579 horsepower and 859 lb-ft of torque. It was purchased as new by its original owner and it just sold at auction for $165,000 with 1,200 miles on the clock. Its MSRP? An imposing $187,400.
 

Losing $20,000 on a brand-new G-Wagen is maybe a little eyebrow-raising. It really depends on the spec and the model year, mileage, all that. However, what we have here is a low-mileage, brand new G580 EQ with the Edition One package. If this had been a Mercedes-AMG G63 model, there’s no way it would have lost those $20k this fast.
 
So then, why did this happen? Well, it’s quite simple, really. The used car market is pummeling pretty much all premium and luxury EVs out there. People aren’t as in awe of these cars anymore, or certainly not to the point where they’d consider paying their original MSRP yet again.
 

The G580 EQ is a fascinating proposition though, but I won’t get into why that is right now because we’re currently testing one out, and our review feature story will drop soon enough (1-2 weeks, tops). I will say this: the range on these is a bit suspect. According to the EPA, they’re supposed to do 239 miles (384 km) on a single charge, but you’re not going to get close to that figure in real-world conditions, especially if it’s cold outside.
 
On the flip side, people who own G-Wagens usually own a nice house, with a nice garage, and that’s where you install a very nice wall charger. This is a fashion statement first and an off-roader second, let’s not forget that.
 

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, let’s take a closer look at this specific G580 EQ truck, rocking the Manufaktur Arabian Gray finish. It’s also got LED lights, a sunroof, power-folding mirrors, front and rear parking sensors, and that coveted $18,250 Edition One exterior package (AMG Line pack, AMG Night pack, Seat Comfort pack, blue exterior accents, blue calipers, four-slat grille, puddle lights, silver running boards, leather upholstery, blue stitching, blue carbon fiber interior trim).
 
Speaking of the interior, other highlights include the heated, ventilated and power-adjustable front seats, heated rear seats, the 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, 12.3-inch infotainment display, the Burmester 3D surround sound system, plus loads more, including the G-ROAR sound experience which is quite cool (more on that during our upcoming review).
 

In terms of performance, we’re dealing with four electric motors (one per wheel), drawing power from a 116-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. In total, the system is putting down 579 horsepower and 859 lb-ft of torque, which trust me when I say, makes the G580 EQ feel more than quick enough. It’s almost as quick as the G63.
 
As for why the seller decided to part with it after just a little over a year, well, your guess is as good as mine. They made a few statements about the car in the ad’s comments section, but didn’t get into why they’ve decided to part with it. It’s not a good look though, especially when it keeps happening to new EVs.
