Mercedes-Benz G 580 Drove 1,100 Miles For Sale

Automakers have taken measures to keep car flippers at a distance, but Mercedes didn’t. That is why the used car market is already full of the all-new Mercedes-Benz G 580, the EV that can do the tank turn. Someone is selling the off-roader just three months after purchase.

Last year, during CES 2024, a convoy of Mercedes-Benz G 580s with EQ Technology took Las Vegas by storm. The cars caused a commotion in the city as they stopped in the middle of the road to perform the impressive tank turn. That sector of the Las Vegas Boulevard was closed for the stunt.

What is the tank turn, you may ask? The vehicle, powered by a quad-motor setup, spins on the spot like it’s stuck there. The move can be performed because the four motors, each operating a wheel, work independently.

The driver just pushes a button on the dashboard and controls the spin with the help of the shift paddles positioned behind the steering wheel, depending on the direction they want to go. The G 580 can spin both right and left.

Originally referred to as the EQG, in line with the German automaker’s electric portfolio, the model was eventually marketed as the G 580 with EQ Technology, and all others will follow in its footsteps. The Mercedes executives figured out that the terminology may cause confusion among customers.

The tank turn is quite a show-off feature
The show that Mercedes-Benz put on in Las Vegas last year was before deliveries started. The first customers got their brand-new electric off-roaders last fall, and some of them are already looking to sell. Take this owner, for instance, who purchased the Benz G 580 Edition One in October 2024 for $161,500. After approximately 1,100 miles with the off-roader, he decided to sell it.

The vehicle is painted in Manufaktur Arabian Gray over a Silver Pearl and black interior. It rides on 20-inch multi-spoke wheels with a black finish, Falken tires, and blue-painted brake calipers.

A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen for the MBUX, and a Burmester 3D surround audio system are on board.

As Mercedes promised, the electric G-Class makes no compromises in terms of off-road performance. It comes with low-range off-road gear reduction and three lock differentials that should keep it stable even with one wheel in the air.

The driver will get a helping hand from the 360-degree camera and the transparent hood technology. Furthermore, the SUV can do the tank turn. Designed to get the off-roader out of a predicament in narrow spaces, it is, indeed, an eye-catching feature.

However, the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology is far from being the first to sport it. For instance, BYD’s YangWang U8 SUV can perform it both on land and water.

The vehicle is set in motion by a quad-motor powertrain, which pumps out 579 horsepower (588 metric horsepower) and 859 pound-feet (1,164 Newton meters) of torque.

Battling with the wind, the (still) boxy SUV rockets from 0 to 60 mph (0 to 97 kph) in 3.8 seconds, runs the quarter mile in 12.4 seconds, and goes as fast as 112 mph (180 kph). The four electric motors have to pull 6,636 pounds (3,010 kilograms).

A battery pack with a capacity of 116 kWh stores enough energy to make the electric G travel as far as 329 miles before it needs to be plugged in again.

Car flipping or just irreconcilable differences?
With such a brief history attached to its name, no wonder the Carfax report is clean as a whistle. With six days to go to the end of the auction on Cars & Bids, the bidding for the 2025 G 5850 with EQ Technology has reached $101,000. But like it usually happens, the last day is going to bring all those interested together to battle for the off-roader.

Another one with only delivery mileage (32 miles) on the clock has just been sold on Bring a Trailer for $188,000, which was $8,500 over the MSRP. It may look like the one right here since it is painted in the same Arabian Grey over the same Silver Pearl and black interior combination, but we can assure you it’s not.

While the one we have here resides in Austin, Texas, the one that has just been sold is in California. Why would anyone pay that much for a car when dealers already offer discounts on the model, we can’t possibly tell.

However, the owner of this electric G probably hopes to get just as much or more. Why else would anyone sell after just 1,100 miles and less than three months with a brand-new vehicle? Of course, irreconcilable differences can be one of the reasons, and we won’t judge.

But making a profit might be one of the possibilities in this context just as much. There is a loan on the vehicle, so sale proceeds will be used to satisfy it and allow the seller to transfer the title to the name of the new owner.
