Mercedes-AMG S63 review by The Straight Pipes. The Mercedes S63 AMG E-Performance PHEV is putting down 791 horsepower and 1055 lb-ft of torque from a 4L Twin Turbo V8 Plug-In Hybrid. At $270,640 CAD, would you take it over the BMW 7 Series, Audi S8?

Mercedes-AMG S63 Review – OVER 1,000 TORQUES!

Adding electric power to the already stout 2024 Mercedes-AMG S63 E-Performance transforms the luxurious sedan into a total monster.

The Mercedes-AMG S63 has long been a hammer in a suit of sorts, a massively-powerful, ultra-luxurious sedan in a world that has largely moved on to SUVs. However, for those that still have love for a good old fashioned flagship sedan, the 2024 Mercedes-AMG S63 E-Performance has basically everything one would want in such a package – mountains of power and some truly impressive features. Recently, the folks at The Straight Pipes YouTube channel were able to spend some time behind the wheel of one, and needless to say, they walked away mighty impressed.

The real news pertaining to the 2024 Mercedes-AMG S63 lies under the hood, where the familiar twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 has been paired with an electric motor on the rear axle, which has tricked down from the brand’s efforts in F1 racing. This new combination also makes the latest S63 the most powerful to date – as it churns out a combined 791 horsepower and a whopping 1,055 pound-feet of torque. It’s mated to a nine-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (and a two-speed unit for the e-motor), while standard rear-axle steering makes the large luxurious barge easier to maneuver around town, too.

As one might imagine, the latest Mercedes-AMG S63 delivers exhilarating performance from a standstill, and one can even drive for a short distance on electric power alone – though the automaker is pretty up front about the fact that this wasn’t its focus. Rather, this big sedan is all about harnessing electricity and turning it into speed. That much is clear from the outside, as the long sedan sits rather low on a set of 21-inch wheels, with quad exhaust tips out back belting out amazing V8 sounds.

One may assume that a big, heavy sedan wouldn’t be terribly great in the corners, but that isn’t the case at all – in fact, the newest S63 handles corners quite well, with a stiffer suspension and air ride setup. Regardless, in comfort mode, the S63 provides a cushier experience, albeit not quite as comfy as the non-AMG version, in all fairness. However, that’s to be expected for a vehicle rolling on massive wheels and performance tires, we suppose.

Ultimately, the 2024 Mercedes-AMG S63 is an impressive machine by all accounts, offering up the very best in terms of what’s possible when you throw some electric power at an already-powerful performance luxury sedan. It can do pretty much everything well, but of course, it does so at a price – with an MSRP just over $180k, sans options.
