While Mercedes-Benz is known for its luxury and sports cars, the German automaker is also adept at producing some of the finest vans on the market. The current Sprinter and V-Class (not sold in the US) will soon make way for a new generation of vans underpinned by the clever VAN.EA architecture can underpin electrified vans of various sizes, which Mercedes is showing here for the first time. It’s worth noting that Mercedes currently offers an electric van in the form of the eSprinter.

These new models, due to hit the road in 2026, have started testing in prototype form, suggesting the Three-pointed Star is putting the final touches on its next-generation commercial and luxury vans. Mercedes says public road testing represents a key part “in the reinvention of the van.” The new VAN.EA platform will allow for clear differences between privately owned premium models and commercial workhorses.

VAN-EA-Based Vehicles Will Appeal To A Wide Range Of Customers
We expect the next generation of vans to mirror the existing lineup, which means the new range will spawn plush, leather-lined models for monied families, VIP transport companies, and high-end hotels, as well as “spacious limousines” aimed at customers with exacting demands – something currently offered by third-party conversion companies. This suggests long-wheelbase models will be offered alongside standard models, with VIP seating like the setups found in the luxurious Lexus LM, Volvo EM90, Zeekr 009, and other rivals.

This is just the start of the testing process. Mercedes notes that its electric vans are currently undergoing stress testing for the electric drivetrain, chassis, battery, and other high-voltage components. Following a successful testing period, the automaker will embark on winter testing in the chilly climes of Sweden. Because many of these VAN.EA-based vehicles will lead hard lives, Mercedes needs to ensure they can take punishment in the harshest conditions, simulating years of family/commercial abuse.

Plenty Of Technology
We expect the VAN.EA models will be technological tour de forces, with the interior benefiting from the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS). Level 2 driving assistance is expected to make an appearance, too. The new platform could keep costs down, with a single highly flexible and scalable platform allowing for varying configurations. The chassis can be divided up in three segments, with the first ‘block’ containing the front axle and electric powertrain. This aspect will be standardized, regardless of the different vans available.

The changes come with the center block, which will decide the length of the vehicle. Here, you’ll find the batteries and the battery case. All-wheel drive models will have an electric motor in the rear block, with front-wheel drive variants using a single front-mounted motor. The platforms will differ slightly, with VAN.EA-P earmarked for privately owned vans. As for range, we can expect up to 310 miles (presumably on the WLTP cycle).
